Ryjalon is for command and to use defend on the Alchemist when they are in ranged formation. He can also use his ranged attack or surge with 10attk 3dmg which lands him on a magic retaliation click.
The monks and whelp are for gang up and with the monks 9-10 attk with Weapon Master can hurt just about any piece. I use them to control an objective or watch over one while hanging out in concealing terrain waiting to strike with a surge.
The alchemist can use a ranged formation to hit with a 13 attk(*** has a 10 +3 from the * and ** capped by Ro3) for 2 dmg (not much but it could help). Or they could each fire with a 9-10 attk for 2 dmg a piece. Plus with Sword attk type they can surge if needed.
All of the whelps can surge or double time once and still keep toughness and be useful.
The blood shaman is there for the usual hex/magic healing combo, and is usually soaring unless he needs to drop to help hold an objective.
I think this could take on most armies okay. Speed wise this army is a little slow but the biggest problem I see is no Precision ability. Varatrix is starting to show up at the venue I play at. Against him I will try for a gang up (not likely to get the chance) otherwise take pot shots at him with Shockwave from the Alchemists and try to kill his support. For anyone else try to move the monks through concealing terrain until i get a chance at the main figure or go after their support if they go after Ryjalon and the alchemists.
I'm open to ideas replacement or strategy. I would like to stay as Draconum as possible.
i'm not loving the alchemists, for 81 points you can get yourself a magna or bladesmith and a * or **scalesworn as harassment and get a midrange heavy hitter.
Add a Whelp Master and the "mandatory" Revenant figure.
Drop Whelp Monks for the points.
Convert Whelp Alchemists to ordinary Whelps as you will likely wind up doing a lot more surging than ranging with this army.
Find a big damage piece and squeeze it in. I was using Demiphant and a few Leech Medics, but that just wasn't cutting it when I needed a 4-5 damage piece to unleash the hurting. Magna or Bladesmith seems likely at this point.
Naturally convert to Shatter, Terlin, and Chainbreaker if at all available.
At 400 pts, I'd convert the heavy hitter for Caldera or Drakor and some nasty relic.
I've used an army on this basis competetively to decent effect. As I said, the one weakness is the damage of most of these figures is 2, barring Weapon Master.
Get rid of Ryjalon... he belongs in Dungeons. For 70 pts... you could use Possessed Draconum and a Whelp Monk*. Possessed is a far better fighter than Ryjalon. If you were using Ryjalon for his Defend.... Flight is no longer optional so you can't build a formation with him. If that was your intent... try getting a Caldera and building a Drac swarm using her.
I have also been trying to come up with some good support for Caldera with Galishe Sunsword.
Also I tried an army of:
Drakor with Sunsword 150pts
*** War Hatchetkrugg 40pts
*** Rage Paladin 51pts
* Blood Shaman 34pts
*** Khamsin trooper 23pts
total 298pts
to some degree of success
Main idea doubletime Paladin so he can surge to a good attack if needed but still keep GF and Leadership. Then use leadership for Drakor or WHK to cause as much trouble as possible. Heal/Hex as needed with Shaman.
Thought about switching Trooper out for *Zombie Centuar for more no dmg doubletiming, but that removes all range and as stated above we rarely use domains so I can't hose opponents range other than GF or Sunsword
I would take out the *** Khamsin Trooper and replace it with a * Harka Ork. You would be at 300pts and you can't get much better than a 25pt fig that can do 6 clicks of crushing blow dammage at a successful 8 inch surge. Then retriet and heal.
Remember back in the 1.0 days when there was a 200 point drac only scenerio? I remember using these:
Mortis Draconum 78 Points
Possessed Draconum 47 Points
Neophant 32 Points
Whelp Master 40
197. With 103 more points, I would use an army like this:
And here you go. A viable 300 point draconum army, that can handle itself in 2.0! ::gasp::
Just remember, its drac...they kinda lack on healing, and there wasnt any way to make room for an 80+ point healer. Just be cautious, gang up frequently and remember. Shatter surges nice from his first to second click. Always give your opponant a choice: Get surged from 47pt possessed for 4, or get sneak attacked by mortis for 10...your choice :)
