Now I started out with Shale and Lady Ciara both riding Sky Dragons, but that got pretty expensive, and didn't leave me with points to trick out Shale after Lady Ciara got her two toys. So I dropped Shale's Sky Dragon down to a Horned Stag.
A little bit on the tactics, Ciara soars over the battlefield blasting formations left and right while Shale tries to stay alive on the ground, also blasting stuff. He goes after singular figures, reading off his Scroll of Storms if he gets an oppertunity, and once he gets Magic Confusion he'll force things to move into B2B for Ciara to Blast to smithereenies. Ciara keeps Shale alive with Magic Healing, and quafs her Potion if she needs to get a pick-me-up. The hardest thing is if I need to heal the Sky Dragon, which I guess Ciara will have to run off to a corner, dismount, heal, and then mount again next turn. If CIara dies, Shale can hope on the Dragon and grab her Lance and Potion (if not used).
So anyway, this was just an attempt to make a half-way decent army using both of my EF Caster-riders. I think it would do pretty well against a swarm, Ciara Storm Fireing formations for 3 damage each, and I think it could work against a caster army (even one that uses Storm Maul) due to the ton of Spell Resistance and a mobile healer that can heal herself. now it is completely shafted by range reducing/removing domains, or any anti-wand domains, and if I meet Kossak I'll have to run my butt off and try to kill everything else.
Comments, suggestions, inquiries? How can I make this better? And no, I'm not dropping Shale or Lady Ciara. Doing so would completely defeat the purpose of having the dastardly duo.
Unfortunately C'dricUrKhan is correct. LDP has ruled that a Cavalry unit's rider can not heal his/her mount. When you think about it rules-wise it doesn't make any sense because fro you to make the required attack action to use Healing or Magic Healing you have to draw a LOF from the potential healers center dot through his/her front arc, and to the center dot of the to-be healed figure. Since you can't draw line of fire to yourself, you can't heal yourself, or in this case the cavalry unit can't heal itself.
Anyway, back to some actual comments on the army folks :D.
Hmm I swear someone saying we could, but if the LDP says so... But then why can people with Tinker heal their mounts? I remeber reading that in the tactics for Magus Tivon.
You can hop of the mount and then heal it. To heal a mount it takes two actions (three if you want to get back on, but you have to wait a turn). What they meant by Tivon Tinkering his own mount was that he could jump off and repair the sucker and get back on, hopefully a good distance from combat. Just imagine if you could Mounted Bound/Charge and Magic/Heal on a mount. They would be even more insanely powerful then they already are.
Actually, last I had heard LDP was currently looking into it due to some questions about this and if sweep would hit both, or if smite could hit both, etc. As far as I know he hasnt replied after looking into it (although he might have ruled before the sweep question came up, if it turns out that they can both be hit by sweep then they should be able to heal one another).
Originally posted by LordDjinnPAWN Now, about that pesky Tinker.
While the Mount and Rider are a cavalry unit they are a single figure (almost a quasi-MDW), here's from page 2:
A mount and its rider are in base contact with each other and form a single figure, or unit.
So besides the fact that a figure can't target itself, there is another Cavalry stipulation.
Now, if the rider wanted to use Tinker the Cavalry unit needs to make a close combat attack against something in it's front arc. Since you use the mount's front arc and center dot when you give a close combat action to a cavalry unit, it cannot Tinker itself, as it's not a valid target for the close combat attack. It needs to be another figure or unit.
The 'self repairing cavalry combo' probably refers to the fact that the rider can dismount and Tinker, remount and ride, where no other figures are needed.
Anyway, back to my Dastardly Duo. Does anyone else have a relic combo that would be better suited for this team? Should I just go ahead and have them both ride Dragons and play Shale Item/Relicless? Would this be better?

I would have to be more careful with Ciara as she won't be able to heal herself, but now they both can soar and have effective defenses of 18 vs. anything on the ground.

This will give Shale some healing ability, that will work on his mount (as they are in base contact), and for one action could heal his Stag, the Dragon, and Ciara if they are base to base. It also gives him Stealth which is great synergy with the Stag's Ghost form and Pathfind.
The last one is the best to me as now Shale is a beast with awesome healing ability and high defense along with good attack. Ciara is protected and against Kossak and Varatrix, the soaring 14 inch mounted charge Dragon will take care of those. What a great theme army for Dark Riders legal EF storyline events.
Alright folks, I got the figures and items/relics together for teh last army, and I'm ready to ship off to a Venue and see how it plays. Any last minute suggestions?
xenossak is right, riders with healing/tinker CAN heal their mounts while they are mounted. it's in the FAQ:
"Replace the first sentence of paragraph 4 on page 2 of the Mage Knight: Dark Riders rules with the following:
A mount and its rider are in base contact with each other. For purposes of their front arc facing, their front arcs are in base contact. Explanation: Removal of the phrase 'and form a single figure, or unit' permits the intended interaction of the mount and the rider without affecting attacks on the cavalry unit as described in the rules."
anyways, the dual EF unique army looks promising, although i think 4 figures(2 cavalry units) in a 300pt army is too few.
