Well,Ithink that inferno is kind of a waste because he cant be shot anyway, but I see where your coming from because he can only be close-combated.The extra defence would help to ensure counterattacks but its allready pretty good. I would definently keep venom, inferno is a mabey.
The reason the Inferno is in is probably for auto-push damage. Considering that affects are stackable, I'm pretty sure the inferno can even be dealt before the venom. It's a nifty idea, but how are you going to deal with objective taking? A lot of little swarm armies are good at grabbing tokens and then dting the #### out to the next token. It's hard to use trix because he requires Surging to get a non-breakaway hit. Also bear in mind that centaurs will give you their backdial when you base them so as to deal you shakeoff. It can definately be troublesome to solo trix.
How will centaurs give you their backdial when you base them ?
As I remember the free spin rules (without looking them up), it states that you bring your front arc into contact with the attacking figure.
I dont know, i was questioning this around my local venue as well. But lately we have been playing that you could base a figure with your back or side arc facing them. I dont think i agree, but i never play centaurs, so i dont have to worry.
you can use yuor Centaur to base a figure with your rear arc, the figure you base can spin to face you (if it's not mounted) but you still have them in your rear arc. next turn (or whenever) you can break and do some shake-off...
there is no rule that says when you base somebody, that you have to base with your front arc...
Preacherman is absolutely correct. Scorch Hammer is an all around better relic for Trix than Inferno, since Trix is already basically range-proof. Sweep will definately be good against any army you play against, and Scorch Hammer has the same auto-damage as Inferno to boot.

PS You can't fee spin to bring your arc into contact with attacking units, although it is true that you can base them in your rear arc. This was my mistake.
I would just like to clarify that Scorch Hammer (according to the unit index) does not deal pushing damage. In this respect it is not strictly as good as Inferno. On the other hand, Varatrix already has crushing blow and a high attack, so he won't have trouble punching trough invulnerable and tough opponents anyway. Inferno's damage ability is strictly better only on a unique with low attack, low damage, or not crushing blow, or one that you expect to get based by a tough/invulnerable figure.
For relics for Varatrix, I find Scorch Hammer is very good. However, with Sky Dragons running around, Trix isn't garunteed his firt hit like he was pre-Dark Riders. Also, now with Pegasi and Griffons, He will sometimes have to "dance" for a while before attacking. That being said, I think Magestone Shield is excellent. His speed is lowered, but what, barring another Trix, reliably has a 14 attack after surging? A 21 defense is Godly. However, if Centaurs are a problem, almost as good a combo is the Scorch Hammer and Magestone Bracers. Great anti-cavalry w/Sweep and effective Venom, and a very nice 19 defense.
He would have a 15 attack after surging, he has the same stats on his second click as the first. 12 attack, 18 def, 5 dam, and 12 speed, with a +2 bonus for CC on his base, along with the +1 to attack which is what i think you forgot to add in.
