I was with a group of friends last night. We were going to play a 1600 point game which was a combo of Conquest/Dungeons. The idea was pretty cool. Well, I used all my Drac uniques and he allowed the use of Relics/Items/Spellbooks at half the point cost. That allowed all my Drac uniques to wield at least one relic. When my team reached the 1600 point max, I looked down as was pretty impressed with what I had going on. I swapped a few relics among figures to better increase some stats, but nothing major.
Then I went home and was thinking about the team I built. And then I got to thinking about the people here on the Realms and what kind of teams you all build. See, with me, I'm the kind of player that will look at my relics and find one I've never used and try and build a team around making this one relic useful. That's where the magic behind Falderal's crazy team ideas come from.
Part of picking a relic and a team is finding the wielder for the relic. I'm the kind of guy that looks at the stats granted by the relic and boost the already high value as opposed to boosting a low value and having an all around average figure.
For example, Drakor has an 8 speed, 13 attack, 18 defense, and 4 damage. I was thinking of boosting Drakor's speed and gave him Dragonfly. Then I thought, there are so many pieces on the board, his speed won't really be an issue. I gave him Giant's Wrath instead, so he had a 16 attack and a 19 defense. I gave Dragonfly over to Caldera and gave her a 14 speed with a 20 defense.
That's more of the player I am. I build my team around making something unpopular or never used and build a team around that and I give that boost to a figure who already has an inflated natural value to make it bigger and more intimidating.
That may be why I lose more often than taking a victory, but it's a lot more fun to me this way. And FUN is what this game has always been about to me. Hanging out with friends and shooting the breeze about the game. Going to tourneys and losing big but having a great time as I lose to kids.
My question to you Realmers is this: What kind of player are you? What kind of army builder are you?
They're open questions and can be answered any way you want. I'm just curious...
I love using lots of nons with maybe one or two unique/ item holders. I love playing a hyena tactic playing style. Basically I watch as my opponents are injured and then I swarm them, also using nons to build walls around objective tokens or the other players healers/support pieces. I try to avoid using lots of relics since they costly in of themselves. I rarely use spells since they are a very chancey system. We also play huge armies *1200 +*, faction pure. I love using DC so I mainly use lots of Zombie centaurs and Blood Demons. I also love my blood cultist, rage paladins, and blood sorceroresses.
My main opponents are usually Solonavi, Orcs, and Elementals.
I don't play 2.0 much, but as for 1.0 I would have the good ol death star formations. I'd get Storm Golem, Techun, or Thunder Golem (or all 3 :D ) with enhacers and run them in combat. For 2.0, I haven't got Magus Alment Lan, but I would put tech circle, tech shield, and implant channel on him with nons so he could shoot anywheer and couldnt be touched. I'm generally a person who is passive and lets my enemy come to me.
I try to get the most out of my Atlantean faction. I do not like big fatty armies and prefer ones that make good use of nons and uniques--a combined arms force.
I like to use beatsticks, mostly without relics. That said, you can imply I use Draconum alot.
I never sit around. It irritates me to see my opponent park on an objective and wait for me to come into range. I move headlong at my enemy and hope for the best. I rarely use any healing. Also, I like to do faction pure alot.
Traps and trickery are not my forte. Beating stuff up is :).
this might sound a lil...well... noobish but i improve on the stratagys and armies of others u know switching figures and relics just to c what i can do and how it works and i have failed more than find ways to improve it greatly but i have improved some things slightly
I play faction pure(or at least only play with my favorite factions) and I don't touch the hated factions.
I prefer to play good players so I learn something......I don'y play to win(not cutthroat) but I do always try to win... I just use my special rules and try to work within those.
Typhon has beaten me before and so has Draddog.... but I learned something each time.
Typhon: don't underestimate Anunub1.0
Draddog: I only got to play him once and it was for the Unlimited Marquee......... it was brutal. I pulled my usual yellow army and he pulled Demiphant, 2 ***Scalesworn Thralls........ needless to say he won handily since his thralls had a defense of 21.
I love to play with my DRACS!!! Just one big fatty like Chroma with Starshield and a lot of semi-uniques, with this i refer to Magna Champs and Battle Mentors, because theyre nons, but they are really powerful, and i sometimes support them with Power of the Dragon Gods and go to town!
i got lcuky in 1.0, my like 4th booster contained, Magus Draconum with magic blast, Heirophant, with 14 range with 2 attacks, and steam golem. how lucky am i?, im a player who picks my team, finds a strategy, and then use my relics accordingly where i think my opponent will my strike me the most.:D
Falderal knows from watching me but I like to keep my armies faction pure but at the same time I try to make them as competitive as possible. It's more of a challenge to build a decent army that way, but if I win, it makes the victory all the more sweeter.
I'm still mainly a fan of the Elementals but ever since I got the Crown of Khamsin, I've been leaning more towards the Revolutionaries.
I like variety. Never play the same army twice and rarely go faction pure. I like to use things that the other players rarely make use of but it's difficult as all the players in my area are top notch competitors using the biggest beatsticks they can. I also tend to build collection slowly with each expansion so it sometimes takes awhile to get rolling. I avoid spoiler lists and enjoy discovering things on my own with new sets. Several players go for the case but that would just limit my enjoyment to one afternoon and there would still be things to chase. I also don't like to copy armies. I'll use the same figure or relic sure but I'll try to find a different way to use it. One last point: I hate waiting for the other player to attack. Sometimes its more stategic but it's too much like not playing.
I like playing stick and run armies as well as run up and kill things armies........hence why I play Orcs and Apoc......and my 22 Sol. Shades........:D
I used to love Varatrix, and never played an army without him. Nowadays, I prefer a pair of smallish uniques (right now Judge Blacklock and Kem Ravenbane), and after using Sky Dragons once, I never used them again.
I like to attempt for faction pure. I've done pure EF but with a Dragon Priest riding Soulmare. I like to try things that I haven't seen posted on the Realms 500 times. Something different and I like to keep my army looking slightly unified, like they would actually march together. I tend to charge into battle with everything and not hold back. Even the weakest figures can charge out there and attempt to do something.
I play for fun. I don't care about the prizes or winning. It's a fun game and I like the people that I play with. I have fun with it. Nothing serious will probably ever be played by me.
