When used as a "wild card" dice for yellow/blue/green attacks, do the red or black dice "change color" to the dice they are supporting, or do they stay black or red?
The reason I ask this is in the case of an Ace on a red or black dice when used in a green dice attack, does it count as a rec Ace or a green Ace? Thanks.
My first response to the question it to say it stays the same, but then I realized that it might well be possible that the dice are supposed to change color.
But after reading the rules, I still think it stays the same color. There is no mention anywhere in the rules about the concept of changing dice color. If the concept isn't mentioned, it's a fair idea that it shouldn't be used. In addition, if you look at G-Dogg, he has a +1 yellow to 2" and a +1 blue from 2" to 12". On the other hand Lothan has a +1 yellow to 3" and a +1 red from 0" to 12". If the red dice changed to yellow when making a close combat attack, the +1 listed from 0" to 3" on the red tape wouldn't actually do anything.
Another thing to consider is the presence of Red and Black Shields. While there is only one Red Shield (Air Elemental) item, the Black shield is fairly common on both items and character bases. If Black and Red dice changed color based on what they were being used for/with, these shields would be useless. All an opponent would need to do was declare the red/black dice is another type and the shield would be negated. Sure the Ace effect would be different, but it's better than loosing the damage /and/ ace effect to the shield.
This isn't an official ruling by any means, just an examination of your question with my offer of an explanation.
If you use the red/black dice in conjunction with other colored dice, they basically serve as extra dice for that action.
i.e If you make a close-combat attack with 1d6 yellow, and decide to add in 1d4 red, its a simple 2 dice attack with range of +0 - +8 to your weapon value. (+0 assuming both roll aces, which ignore bad karma rule).
Now, the hard question is Ace effects. Assuming same example, if you roll 5 on the d6 yellow, and 1(ace) on d4 red, if the attack is fully successful, the ace effect would apply +1 extra damage. If the d4 was black instead, the target figure would have to drop a piece of gear.
Think of this as red dice simply adding "magical damage enhancement" to the attack or the black dice allowing a "well executed disarm or precision strike".
Furthermore, if I understand the rules correctly, if you used a red dice to assist in a blue dice short-ranged attack, and both rolled aces, and the attack was successful so that BOTH aces were usable, you would apply BOTH effects to the target. NASTY!
I hope this helps. Also, my explanations are not official rulings. They are simple, logical interpretations of the rules as written (expanded version).
