Your vision of the "role-playing" aspect of the wildcard dice is correct. They serve versatile functions such as force fields, gadgets, etc.
However, the only time you can use red dice/black dice exclusively is if the figure has a red/black track on their tape.
So, yes, you could use a red d4 with your white d6 for initiative for a d4+d6 augment. But, if you had say a red track on your tape, you could also use 2 red d4's as your initiative and save the white d6 for a dodge roll.
red/black dice can be used for any roll where another die of a diferent collor is rolled along with it. Ie: you decide to dodge with a white d6, therefore you can roll any red/black dice with it.

Hope this helps.

I think you may be a bit off here. The red or black tracks are for attack only. They allow for a red-only or black-only attack.
For Dodge/Initiative/Ect. you would still need to roll at least 1 of the appropriate dice....

No, actually I am right. According to the expanded rules on page 2. In the asterik for red/black dice it says...
Black and red dice are "wild cards." If your figure doesn't have a black or red track, that color dice must be rolled only with other color dice-never alone. If your figure has a black or red damage track, you can use that color die to roll for any effect-initiative, moving, dodging, and attacking-without using another color die.
There ya go. Wild card dice are neat and versatile. But some characters will use them even better. For example, Lothan can use his red dice for alot of purposes b/c he has a red dmg track. But if you gave his fireball satchel to G-Dogg, he would be less versatile with it (using the red d4's to augment his other rolls only) b/c he cant use magic per se.
