We are playing our first game tonight, and I went out to the fabric store and bought a yard of sky blue felt...it was only 6 bucks for a 3' x 6' piece.....so cool! I even got some white "remnants" to make clouds out of!
KuMan and I were discussing doing the same. I saw some flannel the other day that had clouds on it and I was thinking about grabbing some of that too. :classic:
We had a great one on one battle between Crawford and Steele...but speed won the day and Crawford was last seen parachuting over the ocean.
I thought that it would be pretty tough to line up shots with such a limited "arc", but our battle took less than an hour. Hoody Hoo!
The mat looked great, but since all of the planes in the current releases are blue, there wasnt enough contrast.
It would have been nice if the planes were as tall as the VTOL units (helicopters) from Mechwarrior..they have a 6" base stem! very cool....i guess they need to be higher to be above the 'Mechs.
I really enjoyed the whole game dynamic...it was a hex based game, without the hex map! it made for all sorts of tricky positioning.
Initiative, and the "winning" thereof, of course, was a bit of a double edge sword...you definitely get first hitsies, but then you also have to telegrph your speed and direction....
As usual, more complexity and decision making than the 2 pages of rules would have you believe!!
Glad to see you are enjoying the experience so much.
As for the octagon based game without the octagons, try starting with your plnes oriented other than along with one of the 8 sides... so the octagon starts cocked. Makes for some interesting interaction once battle is joined
Heh. We tend to 'cheat' just a little bit and let the movement counters drift just a bit, just so long as it's not incredibly obvious. This lets you change the various angles just a bit between rounds
