Ninth inning. Guardado's on the mound for me. My opponent has a runner on 3rd, Pujols at the plate. I choose to use the Shut 'Em Down Intangible and roll my dice after seeing what my opponent rolls. The roll is control/control.
Do I choose the at-bat result from Guardado's current dial or does the 1 click loss happen immediately and I choose the result from the new (blue1) dial?
Good question.
I would assume that Guardado loses the click after the at-bat both because Wizkids games usually work that way (i.e. take the damage after the benefit), and the wording of the section on total control of the at-bat says give the click then choose the result from the new choices. The wording for the Shut 'Em Down intangible is not like that.
Do you mean the result is ball-control? Giving total control to guardado? IF that is the case the +1 for total control and the -1 for shut'em down is evened out and you pick from his current dial.
Hey, I'm still confused. Seanwalsh says you lose the click AFTER you choose the result from the current dial. Piazzaunique says you choose the result after the click down. And I didn't intend for Guardado to have total control, I was just using the control/control dice roll as an example.
The "Shut 'Em Down" intangible doesnt say you PICK the result. You only get to choose what die you want to throw after seeing what the batter's result is. That just means you can change the result by throwing a die of your choosing and hoping for a different result. You still have to use the results as if it were a normal at bat.
Where did you read that is says you can choose the results too? That would only be IF the pitcher got total control after rolling the die that the defensive manager chooses.

Ok, I'm batting 1.000 today. I re-read the first post and see that his question was regarding IF the pitcher got total control on the roll where he chose his die.
I thought he typed that he would get Total Control just using the Shut em Down intangible.

Lots of confusion here. Piazza answered MonkeyKing's original question. I was bringing up a slightly altered situation in which the pitcher got total control.
Based on my interpretation, if a pitcher has "Shut 'Em Down" and gets total control, he would click up, pick a result, and then immediately click down. Does this seem correct?
any intangible that requires the loss of a click is taken at the moment you fulfill the obligation of the intangible. the way it is worded (and the original intent) is that you:
a) Declare you're using Shut 'Em Down at the beginning of the at bat.
b) After the batter rolls his die, you select and roll your die and resolve the at bat.
c) Your pitcher takes 1 click of performance loss.

You ARE correct from the way I'd interpret the intangibles. Essentially it's a wash as to where you land on the dial, but you DO get the advantage of total control.

Isn't this counter-intuitive? As the manager of the pitcher, I have to remember what results (not to mention what combinations the results map to) are one click down for the pitcher and pick the die before I see what results are available?
I think it would make things easier to take the click before picking the die so you aren't guessing from a managerial standpoint.
