Since its time to start building a new team and all, i have a few questions. So far i am 10-0 and have scored at least 8 runs in every game but 2. i am going to change my team around because ive got a lot of new great playes like arod, Jeter, and Nomar. I also have some sick pitchers (Johnson, Prior, Pedro, and Schilling). So here is where i ask you: is it more important to have a lot of pop and a so-so pitcher less pop and a great pitcher?
There are almost no so-so pitchers in the set, unless you factor in points.
I think you have to *work* at having bad pitching. For instance, one time I rolled back to back Blooper plays and gave both clicks down to Randy Wolf (already one of the worst in the set)
Thankfully, he got shelled like he should've.
If he hadn't my faith in the realism of this game would've been even more severely tested :)
So, I say go with some bats and watch your 95 point pitcher (Lowe) give you 6-7 quality innings ;)
I'd say its a toss up. Both strategies can work well, either having a good defense or having good pitching. But you definately need to match up your defense to your pitcher. I personally like to switch it up A LOT. Sometimes I use a dominating pitcher, and go with a bit of a weaker defense, but some better hitters. Sometimes I will go with more of a control pitcher who throws a lot of GBs, and have some solid infield defense and have some power hitters in the outfield. It just depends, but the key is definately to match up your defense to your pitcher, and no matter what strategy you pick, you should be able to do fairly well.
Nomar22- I'd be interested to see your lineup, especially if you're routinely scoring 8+ runs in a game. What fence depth are you playing with?
As far as your question, I always go with defense over pitching. Half the time the result is gong to be on the batter's dial so you need to have good defensive players to field those results. Great pitchers are nice, but in my mind they just aren't worth the points!
I find it very hard to believe that you've scored over 8 runs in 8 of 10 games. But to answer your question: since there's no scrub pitchers, you definitely need to concentrate on good defense.
ok playas here be the lineup:
C- varitek-4hr
1b-delgado-6hr
2b-Giles-2hr
ss-garciaparra-11hr
3b-blalock-8hr
Rf-Gonzalez-3hr
Cf-Beltran-6hr
Lf- Dunn- 3hr
Lowe 1hr
Zito rules.
Def is slightly more important because even the best SP have scorched, green DFs etc. on their dial...someone needs to make those playes :)
Oh, and Zito rules...trade whatever to get him, sir.
Nomar- Is this a league team, or just a casual team? I'm assuming it's just a casual team, or a tourney team that doesn't require you to have multiple SP's. If you had to have a 4 or 5-man starting rotation, I think you'd be hard-pressed to have that much punch in your line-up.
Also, while I love Varitek, his 4 defense could become a liability against someone who is speed heavy at the top of their line-up. It's awfully difficult to throw out Juan Pierre when you have someone like Giles batting 2nd (ie noone in Zone 6), and Varitek has to throw a 10 to get him out.
Dunn might get you in trouble as well, since he's a big time liability on defense (especially in LF).
