1) About a buck at Wal-Mart.
2) About a buck and a half at K-Mart.
3) A couple bucks at the local gaming store.
4) About three bucks for more than you'll ever need, at Dillon's (grocery store). I picked the colors I did because once I used all the red and white ones for Pirates, I had the three shown plus orange left. I decided to use yellow, green and blue as a nice chromatic trio. The longest wavelength is the L movement, the shortest wavelength is S.
5) Less than a buck for a 12x18 sheet of gray craft foam. Used a sharpie marker to draw the basic shapes, and paint markers to do the colors. You don't need to get so fancy.
Other possibilities for base dice counters include boring ol' glass beads, leftover shield pods, cut up bits of resource cards after you punch out all the resources, googly eyes (for dolls, available in the craft section at Wal-Mart...the idea is that they'd be viewports), pebbles (bits of asteroid, ooooh), etc.
I certainly hope the S, M and L are not red or white! I have three boxes of cocktail spears in every other color!! I like the funnel, and had planned on using one for the "Lunar-lander" resource spreader. (Just put a flare around the spout and put a 1/2 sphere on top, add landing gear and it is done.)
Had some additional thoughts about this...
1. Film cannisters. These are great for putting pods and microids in. Put some red tape around your one that holds Laser pods, and some blue around the one that holds your shield pods.
2. Rulers. I plan to make a set of 3 rulers, one for each of the movement increments. And each ruler will have 6x that move increment on it. That will make it easier to move multiples.
