The Earth Rebels can call very few of their fighter squadrons elite, but the “Avengers” are one of those few. Trained by Wing Commander Matt Robinson, this crack team is both disciplined and creative in its combat tactics.
Avenger Playtip:
The Avengers are one of the most dangerous Rebel fighter squadrons because when deployed together, they have the ability to hit even the most well-shielded ships. While some fighter squadrons work well as wide-ranging annoyances, the Avengers work best massed together as one heavy-hitting group. Having the Avengers fly cover for a resource-gathering ship or sending them after your opponent’s own cargo ship is probably the best bet, as either tactic will keep them bunched together where they can make the best use of their special ability. With only two pods, your choices are limited as to the weapons load-out of the Avengers, and either a single Arc Laser pod and a Shield pod or a pair of Arc Laser pods is probably your best choice. Given the combat skill of Robinson’s pilots, you’re more likely to want to load them up with two Arc Lasers and trust to your Evasive Maneuvers to see you through enemy fire. This will let you cut loose with a grand total of six shots from the three fighters in the squadron, which is more firepower than most Cruisers can muster!
Since you only have one crew slot available in each fighter, and no cargo spaces, your effective crew choices for the Omega VII Squadron are somewhat limited. Probably your best bet, not surprisingly, is to pop Fighter Pilots into each of the Fighters, and let them support one another even more, softening up the opposition by knocking off the pods of your choice. Alternatively, you could drop Weapons Officers into the Avengers to improve their already good weapon rating, allowing them to tear apart even the toughest opposition with ease.
(in Arnie's voice) "It's not a cruiser!" If you go to the stats on WK's site, you will see it is a squad of 3 fighters for 11 points. I am guessing the most commen defensive mix for these guys will be 1 dual arc fighters, with 2 arc and shield flankers. Makes for an interesting and hard to kill group, as the fighters may be able to dodge shots and lay out an impressive amount of firepower. Team it up with the guessed at 6 shield pod cruiser for ore gathering, and you have a scary scary mining team that takes way too much firepower to take down.
For those of you that don't want to head on over to Wizkids' site to see the stats, here they are (slighly formated):
Evasive Maneuvers
This ship gets –1 to its weapon rating for each other Fighter in its squadron within one M increment of it.
