Game Text: Do not give this ship an action the turn after loading Rum. Rum is worth gold equal to 6 minus the number of crew aboard this ship when Rum was loaded.
Playtip/Game Designer Note: Pirates and Rum go to together like…well…Pirates and Rum. Rum is a unique treasure, so you need to declare that you have it when you find it. Discovering a cache of rum is both good news and bad news so rum forces you to lose a turn with this ship, and the reward depends on how many crew members are on that ship. Rum is worth 6 treasure, but you lose a treasure value for each crew (those crew like to nip from the bottle). Its final worth at you home island is 6 minus the crew – so it can be a very lucky treasure to find with an empty ship.

So... If I find this treasure with a ship that has a crew, can I "explore" that ship with another of my ships that has no crew (page 9), transfer that treasure to the ship with no crew, and sail it back to my home island for the entire 6 gold points?

Actually, the text reads "6 minus the number of crew ABOARD THIS SHIP when Rum was loaded". So you could steal it from a crew of five and load it on your ship with a crew of one, and it would be worth 5, since you only had one crew on your ship when it was loaded.
