My favorite is the darkhawk II. It has average movement (L) good guns (2S,3L,3L,2S), great cargo (8) , 4 masts and it only costs 10 points. The downside is when its cargo is full, its base move becomes S. With a helmsman, this ship is great.
My favorite ships is La Magnifique. 17 points, 5 master, L move, 6 cargo.
I like it because it has Broadsides Attack. It can take down almost any ship in the game in one turn. And unlike the Argonauta which has 4, this has 3 for cannons. You have a 50/50 chance of taking out thier ships. I like to use, an Capitaine Arathiel, Helmsmen, and then shiprights. I use Capitaine Arathiel to get up close by killing off shiprights and then attack with boradsides!!!! It might be a little pricey but it works great.
I like to run the Recreant. I usually use it as a do or die ship. I run Captain Jack Hawkins, Calico Cat and Helmsman on it. I try to Ram the bigger ships which with Captain Jack will eliminate one of their crew, then hopefully hit with my cannons-3 2S which will eliminate another crew. Then of course the Ram Action, and Boarding which could possibly eliminate another of their crew. This set up works pretty good against Blackheart if you can get to him first. But that's a big if lol. I beat a Harbinger in 2 turns once with this. He had one mast left after my forst turn.
Why??? Cuz it's just funny when your 5-mast can chase down almost anything (and also get away from almost anything)... and plus, it looks really cool with its black sails =P OR put geoffrey flores on and broadside the heck outta everything =) wheeeeeeee
A very effective gunship -AND- treasure runner. Send her out with cannons blazing then bring her home with gold ( after some crew removal ). Armed with two "move and shoot" characters, Diaz and LeNoir have their work cutout for them.
How to derelict two enemy 4-Masts in a single turn ( suggested strategy )...
1. Movement S+S+S+S ( Raven and Helmsman )
2. Contact enemy ship ( preparation for ramming )
3. Broadsides Attack ( Flores )
4. A single roll of three or better will remove three masts
5. Roll for ramming
6. A roll of two or better will leave her derelict
7. Eliminate the Helmsman for an extra action ( Havana )
8. Movement S+S+S ( Raven )
9. Repeat steps 2 thru 6
Deliverance is pretty bad to the bone. That S+L on a 5 master is crazy. Havana, Le Requin, Helmsman, oarsman and a 1 point crew, you can chase down anything and blast the stink out of it.
Raven is a cool smaller pirate.
Cool French ships are: L'Artesien (speed), La Dauphin Royal (cheapie 5 master).

Just to let you know...
Using the broadsides ability is an action in itself. It is not usuable within a move/shoot action. Broadsides is an attack action. Move/shoot ability is a movement action. You'd need to sack a crew to Black to get the extra action to use broadsides once you engaged the enemy.
La Joya del Sol (12pt)
+ Capitán Alarico Castro (3pt)
+ Helmsman (2pt)
+ Explorer (1pt)
=18pt
If Castro's ability kicks in even once or twice during a game, that's a lot of S+S+S movement and a lot of fast exploring. Lots of cargo room. She's swift enough to run home, or out to open sea away from just about any other ship. In a pinch, 4 masts can withstand a non-Broadsides attack. Weakness? Plague, but not Scurvy. La Joya can fire with a lot of cannons but won't hit often enough to endanger anything that has more than one mast. This shortcoming doesn't matter too much -- this ship is all about bringing el oro home to la reina.
