Destroying the world (for fun and profit, err... points)
Okay folks, here’s a couple of questions thought up while pondering the new scenario for January. :D
Here are the relevant card descriptions, for easy reference:
R.I.S.C. Deforester
Ignore this gear when this unit’s equipped damage value is 0.
(optional) This unit may make a ranged combat attack with a hindering terrain feature as the target. Draw a line of fire to any part of the target. If the attack result is equal to or exceeds 23, the target becomes clear terrain and any figure that occupied the target is dealt 1 impact damage. Then eliminate this gear.
R.I.S.C. Bunker Buster
(optional) This unit may make a ranged combat attack with a blocking terrain feature as the target. Draw a line of fire to any part of the target. If the attack result is equal to or exceeds 23, remove the target from the game. Then eliminate this gear.
-----
Question #1 – Both gears say ‘may make a ranged combat attack with a XXX terrain features as the target’. In the case of a unit capable of multi-targeting (Tremor with Bunker Buster, for example) could the unit target multiple pieces of terrain? How about an opposing unit and a terrain feature?
Question #2 – Are ranged combat formations allowed to ‘attack’ the terrain, since the other members of the formation can’t normally target terrain? Or does the gear extend that ability to the whole formation?
Question #3 – Shouldn’t Bunker buster have the ‘Ignore this gear when this unit’s equipped damage value is 0’ also?
Question #4 – I’m guessing that after ‘Then eliminate this gear’ the opponent to the attacking player’s left receives points for them as normal. Correct? Or, since the active player used them, no one gains points for the gear’s elimination.
This is just my take on these things, rockbender, but:

The gear states to choose a terrain feature as the target. That makes it pretty clear that only one piece of terrain may be targetted, and that it will be the only target - no units.

Since the other members of a formation could not target the terrain, I would have to say no - although I certainly played it that way once! However, the terrain is not a legal target - unless you line up 3 or more Mechs all equipped with the appropriate gear.

I don't think it's been FAQed to read that way, so no.

The other player will get the points for it, unless the card says otherwise. Which these ones don't.
