So, my first event in 3 months (unexpectedly out of gaming for all that time, and it sucked), and I had to do my part for ye olde Republic once more.
Army was built as three 600pts with leftovers in case I played a fourth round. Ended up playing three, and managed to no lose any units in games, withdrawing anything that was vulnerable to being eliminated. The last 200 was RotS Violator w/ Raptis and a couple of infantry so I could tweak whatever I had left into something playable.
Army #1 (600) (Played all three rounds)
Hellbringer w/ Ryhora, recruited to RotS
RotS Solitaire w/ Graves, Evade
RotS Zahn w/ H Sniper
RotS MHI APC w/ H SRM Team & RotS GDSA (AnP!)
RotS Sylph
Armies two and three were very similar, using RotS Loki, Dagmar & Lassonde with Solitaires with Millhew & Dane with Evade and similar support. All 600, no FP.
PCs I played were Craters & Urban, specifically to counter Caverns. I wanted an artillery duel if possible and force my opponent to assault into my defenses, where I could take the standing shot and base. I went with mostly blocking terrain, and a hindering in case I needed to park my sniper in it. I let my opponents bring water, so I can either pog it or put it on my side.
Game One
SC/Novacat. All Nine with Kym, J. Carrot in his Raven, three Thunderbirds (elite?) and a Bishop carrying three CBAs. Novacat FP. Terrain - Water far enough apart to prevent easy use by my opponent, blocking on left side of my board for cover for MHI/Sylph. We both PC'ed out dummies.
Arty pogging starts, and proceeded to ping Carrot, Kym & the Bishop steadily. Carrot indirects the Sylph, crippling it and I pull it back. I move up my mechs, using Solitaire as cover (24 + Decoy at range) for the Hellbringer, but CBAs drop and base me (doh!). I can't get my GDSA out, and end up having to melee/break from the CBAs. Carrot runs into my DZ, where I turn and start wailing on him, but time is called.
VCs 1 vs 1. I had withdrawn my Sylph (salvaged) but my opponent lost VC 2 as she was short and had the FP, so I eeked a 1pt VC win. Yikes. However, since I lost nothing, I figured "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." My key mistake was not anticipating the CBA drop, as my MHI was not in position to support the mechs.
Game Two
Novacat #2. Two 16" Novacats (veterans, 241 pts?) with Adam Stark/Reengineered Laser & Celina Santos/Decoy and Novacat FP. Terrain - water, lots of water & blocking. He PC'ed Swamp to counter my Arty (somewhat) but I eliminated the water with Urban.
Short, I moved my non arty up behind blocking in the middle, let him move up his mechs and pog'ed them accordingly to keep pressure up. He ran up, putting Stark in the line of fire (he thought he'ld put the Celina/Decoy in the way) to cover the other mech. I ran my Sylph to easy VC 3, and dropped the MHI to formation fire the Hellbringer with a 15 attack, following up with the Solitaire, all of it hitting hard enough to cripple the first Novacat. Stark lasted another turn, ran and was finished off by the Sylph. I proceeded to roll multiple critical misses but my opponent focused on TSEMP'ing the Hellbringer but kept missing. Eventually, I started hitting, and I managed to salvo my shots so I killed the second mech completely, for 3-0. I wanted the extra VC 2 to help offset tie breaking later, since I had barely won my first game.
I kinda disliked this game, as I had to call my opponent's error on his mechs after I'ld hammered Stark for 13 clicks, when he realized the error and proceeded to switch the mechs (and the damage). One hit, yeah, but it was a couple of turns later when the error was realized and I had shot through Decoy already. Losing nothing was huge here, as I had toyed with the idea of running three Solitaires for round three, but figured again, "It ain't broke." An interesting comment from my opponent was he'ld not seen a firing formation using a mech in a long time... well, neither had I, but it worked out for me
Game Three
Clan Wolf with Steel Wolves. CW Thor with IT, 1/2/1 (?)pilot and Gray Wulfen with Gwen, backed up by formation of SW infantry, SW Maxim w/ two SW Mortars & Fenir. PCs played were Dummy by him, Craters by me (my last card). Blocking was dropped all over, so the Thor had free LoS to everything. Ick.
I let him move up, pog'ed and had my sniper charged by Wulfen. The pogs hit all over, thankfully. With the damage done, I broke away and withdrew the sniper, then destroyed Wulfen with the Solitaire, Zahn (missed!) and Sylph (Hits!). My opponent drops mortars, pogs and I move up to try and close distance, again putting the Solitaire in the line of fire to absorb the CW Thor's attack. He misses, but bases the Solitaire with infantry and pogs again, on the Solitaire. Following turn, I break, run to enemy DZ with Solitaire and avoid shutting down. I left my Hellbringer to cool, but I ignore the pogs since I had Hardened and let my GDSA spray the formation with AnP. I then let the pogs cripple his infantry for me, finishing off a CW Purifier. My opponent misses with his CW Thor again, leaving me free to pummel him with my shot, which does hit. My opponent concedes, being down a mech, behind on VCs and his Thor without AP to deal with Hellbringer's hardened armor. (He's also a good friend, and didn't worry much about it.)
Much fun, enjoyed most of my games. I saw one more NC, Kurita (Shiros & Schmidts, we joked), another RotS and Banson present.
Tomorrow - Steiner. Why? Feh, I dunno, I wanna blow stuff up.
