I for one am glad that there is no side decks. I feel, a side deck would start to make some cards playable. Not to mention any type of deck would start to look alike.
You folks at UDE, have put some time and effort into this game. So, please do not change your mind and make side decks legal!!!!!!!
UDE has said that they have no plans for sideboards/side decks.
I think that there are just players who hate that to deal with every situation they need to include the cards main deck. Well to them I simply say deal with it. There are no "bullets" that you can't play with it.
Put 2 Foiled, 2 Kaboom, 2 Backfire, and 1 Flame Trap into your deck and you have tools to deal with a number of problem situations. The cards you choose need to react to your local metagame. Here in T.O., I think FF/Equipment is getting a little too popular. So in goes the Backfire or Power Compressor or Scarlet Witch (if they want to take 7 to move an Equipment, I'm fine with that).
I'm a huge fan of any game that necessitates teching, instead of side decking. In a game that requires tech, it's a big decision to determine what tech cards you'll use - you're committing to cards that you know fully well will be nearly useless against certain decks. That takes guts, that takes skill, and it takes brains. Moreover, it takes talent and experience with the game itself - not talent with the extra, unnecessary game element that side decking often is.
Just my two cents, I'm sure there are people who prefer side decks... but they're not me, is all... :D
I completely agree with JDGloom. Not adding a side-deck does two things:
1) It forces people to build their decks more versatile/adaptive.
2) It rewards people who have in-game play skill as well as deck-building, instead of just "whoever has the money to cookie-cutter the best deck and gets a better draw wins".
Side decks are needed in some games, but I do feel it is not needed in the VS system.
Your deck should change from tourney to tourney. Learn and adapt. Having a side deck would just limit your imagination.:ermm:
One would just tech right after a new set is released and then stop. Every thing is there in one "nice" litttle package (a cookie that is). With no side deck, you would have to tech before each and every tourney, and who knows, even find a new little combo.
In s sidedeck/sideboards defense I think we should have them. Maybe like a 5 card sidedeck but im willing to let in more or less.
It's no fun to have 2 foiled!s or Ka-booms in your hand or face down, know you'll never get to use them. It's a waste of space in a deck. Of course, not to say that they don't help every deck (they do!) but being able to add the max via a sideboard is helpful on your part. It helps make decks accomidate situations, makes games go smoother and faster, and speed up Matches.
I understand it puts an emphasis on proper deck building, but I hate having worthless cards in hand.
Some cards are so specific the only play they would see is probably from being shuffled in via sideboard.
I think it especially makes limited play much smoother also.
Having some cards that can be shuffled in for a few speicific threats is ideal. Especially since your opponent would be doing the same also.
There are cards that can help get rid of those "dead" cards from your hand. I forget exactly which ones, but there are some cards that require a discard form the hand, as part of the activation payment.
First Brotherhood is a killer deck, which made folks play Ka-boom!s and Foiled. Then Sentinal decks are making a run for it's money, with little or no locations and/or ongoing plot twist. Ka-Boom!s and Foiled will start to see little or no play. The metagame will the switch to location and ongoing plot twist based decks. The game will switch from one type of deck to another. Add the factor of a side deck, then folks will start to play just with one type of deck instead of another. If you are play a Brotherhood deck, then that is all you would play. You would never try a different type/type of deck. Why play a different deck if your side deck would let you fill your holes?
well i just read on kergillian yahoogroup from jeff donias himself, that the designers do have plans of a sidedeck of sorts, it will be something different than what magic uses. no idea on when they will make it oficial or even if they will use it. go check out the group yourself and see.
Well, I am just going to have to take out my "cookie sheet" and get ready to bake.
But, atleast for right now.... NO SIDE DECKS :p
Interesting, something in the lines of like the Fussion Deck, in Yugioh. Accessable in the middle of a game, but through a weaker card.
Any ways, we have to play the way they let us play. If a side deck they permit, a side deck we will have to play. Of course, you don't HAVE to play a side deck, if you don't want to.
yeah, i have no idea what the heck a fusion deck in YGO is so if anybody can tell me, then maybe i can understand what Mr. donias has in mind for the future,
A fusion deck is a separate deck that has cards that you may access by playing card/s from you main deck.
Maybe something like a PT called "Avengers Assemble" that allows you to recruit a character from the 2nd/fusion deck outside of the recruit phase or a PT called "Bat Signal" that allows you to do the same.
Who knows how they will make it work.
