Ok, let me preface this a bit. I don't play nearly as much as I like, and I came into this game HATING Magic and only playing one serious card game in the past... L5R... I am a roleplayer and HATED Marvel for scrapping the latest RPG which was actually an amazing system. And I SWORE I would drop Clix (I did) And not support a card game because Marvel screwed us again... and they have NEVER gotten a card game right anyway.
So, 2 months and a sizable collection of cards later, i am hooked. Just like the rest of you Schleps. Now, we don't get many conventions in Spokane WA, and the chances of me getting anywhere near a PCQ is slim to none. I have thus far played in one actual Tourney, a draft.. and came in a close second (read it in my journal!). So I guess I need to get used to using Apprentice if I want to see any consistent action.
But I digress (as I often do).....
So my outlet is these forums. Now I am unknown, and just some nobody with opinions and little else.. but isn't that what most of us are? And I want to share my opinions with you and in return hear yours back! Man, that was a long winded ### intro into a simple thread wasn't it?
So here is the premise. What is the single most useful, best, most underrated, overlooed or PhAt card in the set in your opinion? The rules are thus....
1) You can choose ONLY ONE! No rambling on about many others, just choose one above all others, one card to rule them all and in the darkness .. err... you get the point...
2) I DO want you to ramble a bit about WHY you choose that card to be your Muse, to be your silver bullet, be your Cardimus Mostus Maximus.
Now, lets try to limit the commentary on others picks. if you agree with someone, then great. if you disagree then start another thread. this one should be an expression of each persons love, and a love letter to that rarest of card who owns their heart explaining why! With as little heckling form the peanut gallery as possible.
If anyone has read my Journal they know what mine is, but I will post anyway to get things rolling.
Ok, my choice for best, most under-rated, most delicious card thus far has to be....
Press the Attack
Now I knoew, the idea that you need 4 exhausted seems to limit it, but it really doesn't. Between it's cost, and the exhausted requirement, what this card becomes is the great equalizer. After turn 4 it lets you use one of your lower characters more than once, which can compensate for your opponent perhaps having a larger character in play.
It is great for X-Men to help them over that 4-6 drop slump. And with fastbnalls and finishes, it can really pay to pack this card and swarm with lower level guys instead of playing what are percieved to be sub-par 5 drops.
For Sentinel? No brainer there. Every extra use is a good use.
Skrull? But why woudl you want to bring back one of them? Well, that whole massive attack bonus if he is one of 4 Skrulls comes to mind. And lets not forget the fun you can have with Super Skrull and this card. Front line attacks... Super Skrull attacks and resets the front line... front line attacks agian. PRESS THE ATTACK! And Super Skrull attacks again! Then he resets the whole front line agian! Does the hilarity ever end?
That is one key about this card that is not shared by the many other 'ready the target' cards out there. After a press the attack you can indeed attack. Any character can benefit from this, but who best?
How about Juggernaut? He is so bad-assed that they built him to only be allowed to attack every other turn. but with this card you can have him hit twice before your build phase... or more if you are running enough copies of this card!
And even though the game is combat centric, let us not forget all the other wonderful abilities this card can let you use multiple times. Jean Gray for placing 2 resources a turn instead of 1 (or more with more copies). Jealous of how the FF can use Cosmic Radiation to ready Alicia or Franklin more than once? Use this card and Xaviers Mansion and see how many X-Men you can save from doom with Moira.
See how many items you can fetch on turn 3 or so with Forge.
See how many cards you can cycle with Longshot in an X-Men or even Sentinel deck.
Take a look at your opponents face when your 7 Drop Xavier uses his ability 3 times in a row on his already exhaused ELBET.
How about when Senator Kelly blasts for endurance each time... with PLENTY of Wild Sentinels to qualify for the exhaustion.... if it is worth doing once, it is worth doing 3 or mroe times i say.
So with all the cards in set, since this is the only readying card that is really non-team oriented, I think this is easily the most useful and underappreciated card in the set. It has won me so many games that woudl have been close without it.
It may not be right for every deck, but thus far it has been just right for every one of MY decks.
it is good on many levels of the game. such asa team attk to hit your doom, myst.para. and the team is broken and flip the bigger. doom goes un-scaved
also, he pumps up a guy high, but not hogh enough for overload, exaust the little ####.
now, lets say you see a small cost guy in front of another guy. of couse he will reenforce, or plan on doing so. exaust the s. row guy an give it a beating.
along w/ doom-bots or 4 drop doom and such, get it back and use it again
and it cant be hurt by a not so fast
the only thing bad would be a P. force field, and not many use that, let alone most equip.
its all about the mind games doom uses, and a doom deck is all about screwing w/ the opponents head and pissing them off and throwing them off. they'll eather wont concentrate when they are angry or too wuss to do much after.
Oh, i always wanted to use the word digress, but didnt know how to spell it
Overload. There are SO many ways to use it. However, I will admit that it is starting to break into the metagame and become a bigger card. Which is a nice thing to see.
Originally posted by Verix This may be a silly question but, KOed characters count as exhausted characters?
No, Verix...I think what Wrath meant was with Colossus being pumped up with 5+ KOed X-Men and him being able to Press the Attack with other exhausted X-Men out there.
Personally, I would go with [card]MOR-199[/card] : Marvel Team-Up. This is purely from a philosophical standpoint as one of the main reasons I got into the game was to experiment with all the different teams VS can offer. Combining teams leads to exciting possibilites. I havent seen any real action with it yet - but to me that card is what the VS system is all about.
I would say a very overlooked card is Base of Operations
it practically allows you to choose what you want to draw next, giving you a great advantage in the game
Too add to my choice, that being Press the Attack, lets look at a card in the new Spidey set.
Madame Web. This card is insane. And can you believe she is a common? With press the attack you will gain 4 endurance and force a 4 card discared on your opponent. Hvae all 4 Press the Attacks? Enough characters to trigger it? How does 10 endurance gain and a 10 card discard sound during your build phase? Again, this is only if yuo can exhaust yuour characters during your build to trigger it, but add to that some Cosmic Radiation if she is X-Men teamed... or Xaviers School if she is X-Men teamed (also add Rogue for another use), etc....
