I think that Marvel is an awesome game. One of the best I have played in a long time. I love the game play and characters. It's fun because all of the little kids aren't killing the game. But one thing I don't like is the 1st Edition and Standard Edition. That is the biggest problem in any game. Pokemon for instance, when I played Pokemon 1st Edition Charizard was like $100 and that was just cause it was 1st edition. Yu Gi Oh for example, 1st Edition Raigeki is $20 and unlimited $10. What is that? I also try to get trades and I hear the same thing over and over..."Is it 1st Edition?" What is that? Why do people care so much? I think my Savage Beatdown Standard Edition still gives +5 attack or does the 1st Edition give +6????? Come on people get over it, it doesn't matter when it was printed it's the value of the card in gamplay. If it does the job I don't care if it is in 3 pieces and discolored. Hey that’s just me and my 2 cents. Also the second biggest problem is Brotherhood. WHY IN THE WORLD DID UDE MAKE THIS???? I will get you one day Sabertooth....one day...
I think your answer lies in the first C, in CCG. Collectible Card Game.
Many people get the cards for the sake of collection - and not play. Because of this, 1st ed cards are considered more valuable, as, over the life time of the game, there will be fewer of them around. UDE cater not only for the gamer, but for the collector.
As for the creation of Brotherhood, I feel the same way some days. I mean, Lost City, Feral Rage, Savage Land, New Brotherhood.... The Brotherhood WAS set up to win in the beginning, but as we always say, the metalgame will evolve, especially as new sets are released.
Yes, the Brotherhood is tough, and its game theme is big pumps and quick damage - which is perfect for a game where 99% of the win condition is to reduce your opponent to <=0 endurance. But they can be controlled, slowed, and stopped. As we see more cards and sets, and hopefully more win conditions the playing field will balance out a little more.
Ironically, my beef with the game is actually the cards that give other teams a fighting chance against the brotherhood - savage beatdown, flying kick, and acrobatic dodge. Very nearly 'staples' in just about every build - cards you pretty much play because they are so powerful/useful you would be stupid not to. And they are wild cards to boot! Any character can play them. What I like about the brotherhood pumps is that it is in-theme to the team build. Obviously the wild cards can also lend power to the 'unaffiliated', since they aren't team specific. So what about the wild cards being geared towards only unaffiliated, to reduce their 'wild' nature?
The main reason for my post is to make my views known to the designers of the game. Many of the cards have a balance of cost associated with them - Overload can only be played on a character with an ATK that is GREATER than double - which needs to be timed correctly. Not So Fast is limited to a threshold of 1 and requires a discard. Combat Protocols only boosts your Army Sentinels, only works against one team, and does not give the bonus when attacking the player directly. But Savage Beatdown and Flying Kick are just gravy. Pure and sweet with no negatives if played at the right time. I would like to see the deck builds and strategies continue to grow, and avoid the game devolving into most decks containing 30 'wild card staples' and 30 'big character / new brotherhood / lost city type booster cards'.
I have more problems with Doom than Brotherhood. Brotherhood I know what to expect. Doom cheeses me off to no end. Even when I play Doom I feel like I am cheating, which is the way you are supposed to feel I guess when it comes to playing the bad guys. But playing against it drives me nuts.
Comic representation wise, Brotherhood isn't as nearly as powerful as in the game. This is something which disturbs me quite a bit. UDE seems to deliberately make Brotherhood -the- team that will win the rest. This game in my opinion, is perfect in the sense of character power representation. Never have I seen a game this accurate that represents super powers/characters so realistically (eg. Jean Grey, Phoenix Force has to have a dead Jean Grey in KO pile in order to be recruited). But Brotherhood beating the - out of Fantastic Four or Doom...?
...:ermm:
...doesn't make sense at all. But like Latuki Joe said, perhaps newer sets will balance things out. Am looking forward to that . ;)
OK, some people need to re-read comics with the Brotherhood in them.
Blob... near unstoppable. Him and Juggernaut clash and it becomes ugly. Blob is unmovable. Only the strongest of X-Men counter him.
Quicksilver.... is the FASTEST character in the entire Marvel universe. the fact that he can only attack twice and Wolverine Berserker Rage gets unlimited is off if you ask me.
Magneto.... the single most powerful mutant on the planet. Quite possibly in the top 3 of most powerful characters in the entire Marvel universe if you factor in everything.
Sabretooth.... Wolverine often outsmarts him, or someone steps in and mind controls him. He is one of the most savage fighters in the entire Marvel universe.
So no, Brotherhood are indeed one of the most powerful collections of characters in the MU. It is only with 2 things that the X-Men often coutner them. teamwork (enter Slim and Nightcrawler, FE), or mental powers and mind control (Jean Grey and Xavier). Those are really the ways the X-Men prevail... but often they just get trounced by the Brotherhood first.
Regardless of their place in the comics, Brothehood in its current state seems to be at the center of the metagame. Brotherhood WAS built with strongest card (Locations, especially).
-grin- while my current deck does use B-Hood, it doesn't use TNB, Lost City or Savage Land, and it doesn't use Savage Beatdown, Acro Dodge or Flying Kick.

Sure I agree with all these points. Brotherhood characters are indeed powerful. But did we ever see the Brotherhood team outsmart/outplay Doom or Fantastic Four in the comics? They can't even pass the X-Men.
I agree it is the location cards that empower Brotherhood to be the best deck right now. I don't have anything against the Brotherhood deck/characters, etc...I'm probably just tired of seeing characters being misrepresented from the comics. Perhaps I need to stay away from Heroclix and enjoy this game more.
But magneto DID own/run genosha. He did create an asteroid base. But he did have an orbital space station. But he DID raise an entire island form the Bermuda Triangle. He did run the Savage Land. And no, no other super team came to face him... only the the X-men.
Why?
because only Xavier knows him. only Xavier has Cerebro to track him. Only Xavier is powerful enough to stop most of the other brotherhood. In the comics, magneto brings entire nations ot their knees. Only Doom rivals him in his influence world wide. So I am not sure I see where they are being misrepresented. Seems to me they are dead on.
And for the record... Xavier alone can stop Doom. Xavier alone can stop the entire FF. The X-Men as a whole are easily the most powerful super team in Marvel when they work together. Sure, Iron Man and Thor are some real powerhouses for the Avengers.... but neither one can touch Xavier. Colossus woudl give either a run for their money. Storm can take both of them.. and has..... and Phoenix? Well, thats not even fair to quote.
