Hey guys....I saw an interesting post on another site about how Marvel is doing in you neck of the woods and I wanted to bring it over here since there seems to be a lot more activity on here. I have traveled to a few PCQs and every week it seems the numbers are getting smaller. I talked to an organizer at one of the events I was attending and he basically told me UDE expected the turnout to be around 100 people at each PCQ. How realistic was this expectation?
At the events I have been to, it has been something like this:
Sealed - 35, 20, 15
Constructed - 41, 22, 21
I of course read about turnouts as low as 11 in some places and I am pretty sure that 35 and 41 are the biggest turnouts for PCQS except for the one in Canada last week.
And how about in your store? We have sold 58 boxes in my store. I have 15-20 unique players that have bought boxes and/or packs. Yet, we only have 4-5 people that show up on a regular basis for tourneys or playtesting.
CCGs are down a bit in my area except for YuGiOh. Summer is here and it has been generally nice outside so people try to break free from their geekiness and enjoy some sunshine.
I hope the new hobby league generates some excitement about playing in tournaments. We are certainly pushing it hard and when UDE releases all the information we will really talk it up.
I think people expect it to jump up to Magic numbers right out of the gate which is very unrealistic. I think it has made a small dent in the Magic community and it has definitely put the nail in the coffin of LOTR, a game doomed to die anyway because of Decipher being as bad a company as they are.
So, having said all that, where do you see VS. going? Will it be strong enough to support a Million Dollar Pro tour? Or will we see "UDE dollars" and fake prizes on the horizon?

That's exactly the situation where i live. You see people coming in and buying by the cases of marvel origins, And you only see about 4-5 people actually coming in from time to time to play.
I guess where i live the majority of people tend to prefer collecting over actually playing.. *shrugs*
Well, Here in Toronto it's still to early to tell. It's selling really well also, but we've only had 1 PCQ here and near 50 people showed up for it. We've had people tavel to other PCQ's from here (i.e. Philly). In those cities with dropping attendance, I think once the new set comes out things will pick up again. Right now the tournament scene is pretty dull. It's all brotherhood and FF. Once we have more to teams to chose from all will be well. Assuming the metagame balances out of course. If Brotherhood/ff continues to dominate, it will definately be a long summer.
The number of people at our store has steadily grown since the beginning. At first it was a struggle to run out weekly tournaments and last Friday we had our largest tournout todate. Each new set will draw in more players just becuase there is a game that represents their favorite comic book character.
Also once the first Pro Circuit event concludes, I know there will be a pick up of interest. Add to that the new hobby league program starting in Auguest and I think we will see a nive swell of players by the end of hte year.

I agree. I'm actually looking more foreward to DC Origin's release then i am for the next few sets.
I beleave the first two sets are just to get everyone accustom to how sets will look in the future (Based around 1-2 teams, everyone has a link to one another etc..)
Heh.. Im Really REALLY looking foreward to Gotham Knights and Akhram Inmates (Spelling?).
Oh, one more thing, as for the turn outs, I think that has more to do with the frequencey of PCQs now. At first there was only 1 or 2 to choose from each weekend, now there is 4 or 5, so people are not traveling as far to play.
Again, I think it will continue to gather steam. We need to give it at least two full seasons to properly evaulate its long term growth.
There is a lot of small things they are still working on that is needed for a healthy game and they are getting them completed piece by piece.
Ijust came bak from my comic book store, and while people are buying. .they can't seem to organize an event that meets with everyone's schedule. I'm going to try this friday night league and see how it goes. at least I know docx will be there. hopefully others will also be there. :) Jsut needs to be more play... and I think VSRealms will try to help that out in a major way.
In my area, many MtG players are picking it up and YGO players are moving to it.
The PC is a nice impetus and once the Hobby League starts and DC is out... you should see a lot more activity.
I feel sorry for DuelMasters... seems like VS took a lot of focus away from it. You would think that younger players would go from YGO to DM but since most young players want to be like the older ones, they move to either MtG or now VS.
Well it's sold like hotcakes here - and UDE people have said that its sales are comparable to the sales of magic so far this year. They sold out 1st edition faster than they expected by weeks, and were unprepared for the rush on standard, which has been selling strongly as well.
The tourney scene is a little slow, and I think that this is because of people testing the waters, and not wanting to play with and against the same decks over and over.
As for the PCQs, I have a hunch that there was more interest than expected in running them, and that there is a wider, larger schedule of PCQs than initially expected...
Origins will give a clue as to THIS YEAR's state of affairs - if it's packed wall to wall, then I wouln't put much emphasis on individual PCQs. If the Origins tourneys have a lot of extra seats, then I would say that the game is obviously young and not ready to take a bite out of the tournament scene yet...
Remember than Heroclix tourneys didn't really take off until Clobberin' Time.
I have surveyed around the game stores in my local area and the responses have been very different. In 2 of them Marvel flys of the shelves and one can barely keep them in stock. Other stores have tons and it drags really slowly. Itt mostly comes through a age and interest thing. With the upcoming Spiderman 2 movie, this may draw some more interest.
Also when you think about comics and super heros, Superman and Batman are usually the first 2 you think of. With DC Origins, I think people are going to be drawn to it more than the Marvel due to the universal recognisability of those 2 characters. That and the second set is basically a launching platform for the game. If the second set is solid, works well with the first set and doesn't negate or replace it, then people usually set it as a worthwhile investment of their time and money.
I also think that once the Hobby League goes into full effect that'll help attract a lot of participants to local tournaments. If there isn't tournament support for a game, the game will die.
I can understand why things have been a little slow with the current lack of tournament support. I'm confident the game will become huge when the Hobby League hits.
We are getting the same thing. In my spare time at work, I am teaching VS, bragging about VS, trying to round up interest. I've sold the game well, and we've gone through a ton of booster boxes already.
And yet our tournaments steadily have a number of 4 people.
We play with two others, there are the 3+ kids that come to the tournaments, and I KNOW there are a ton of S. Florida players because VSRealms says so if you do the proper search.
I also hate charging and arm and a leg for a sealed ($18).
We only have problems trying to hold a Constructed Tournament.
The store I go to has Draft every day... sometimes twice a day. Whereas before we could only get a 4-man Draft, we now can get 6-man or 8-man everyday.
We used to do Sealed but since the PCQs do a top 8 draft, everone likes to practice their drafting skills.

I agree, the lack of prize support is really annoying...played in my first tournament last weekend, went undefeated, and didn't get anything :-p
My suspiciousion is that a lot of people will just go to a tournament that has prizes instead; right now if I'm choosing between a heroclix tournament and a vs tournament, the prize support issue means I'll pick the heroclix tournament.
