Random THread of the Day! DC Card Artwork Comparisins!
Okay, I am not a Comic book person per-say, there for, I have no Idea who some of these artist's are lol. So my only knowledge of Comic Book Artist's is from these cards lol...
As I look through the DC set, I notice that some of the Art Stands out WAY More then either the Marvel set or any of the other DC Cards in the set for that matter...and that is The ArtWork Of Chris Balcho and Richard Friend....I know nothing about these two, but the Cards that they have made Artwork for is DOWNRIGHT AMAZING lol.. By For Batgirl, Shiva and Omen are the Foil crads I am looking for right now, and Phantasm is great too!
I just wanted to know your opinion of Certain Artist's in this Card game. I kinda Like Steelfreze's work, as well as Alex Garner's(He was a Slave for the Marvel Set lol...), and Kevin Nowlan throw's in some quality retro stuff...although I wish his cards had more backround lol....
So in a whole, what do you all think about the Artist's?
I'm glad to see someone give Mr. Garner some props for all the great work he did on the MOR set. The poor guy worked on so many cards, it's amazing that most (if not all of them) are quality pieces. I find it a bit unfair that he doesn't get mentioned as a featured artist for the MOR set, while Adam Kubert who only did 1 card for the set gets his name on the box. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say Adam Kubert's work isn't good or anything. I just want to see Mr. Garner get some well deserved props because he earned them in MOR in my opinion. ;)
Anyway DC still hasn't made it to my neck of the woods so I can't really comment a lot on the art, but from what I've seen from the scans online (and on VSed) I'm generaly impressed with the work put out, just like I was with how Marvel came out.
Batman: the Dark Knight is just awesome! The art is great and the flavor text helps sell it so well! Or is it the other way around? Regardless I want at least a few copies of that in foils. :) Some other favorites I have are Ra's Al Ghul: The Demon's Head (classic Ra's), Total Anarchy, Deathstorke and Have a blast all look good too, and who can forget Batgirl!
I have to say my one disappointment in the set is Joker: Clown Price of Crime. The actual art itself is not bad; and I can understand why some people would like it, but two things bother me about the card. ..
One why does Joker have a half contorted face?! And why is he in a straightjacket for his CPOC card?! In fact, he looks a lot like Prince did for his old music video for Batman the Movie. When I first heard about the CPOC card I had a more "classic Joker" look spring into my mind, but alas it was not to be. I don't think it goes with the flavor of the card one bit it almost makes me not want to play the Inmates. But that's just my opinion.
I think they should have switched the flavor text of Joker: Laughing Lunatic and Joker: CPOC because Joker: LL talks about going crazy and Joker CPOC talks about, um... laughing
Originally posted by Raven I guess everyone didnt notice how bad the penguin sucks...makes me mad...
Wha......?!?!?!?! I just love The Penguin's picture! In fact, I'm collecting them because I like it sooo much! Granted they probably could have done a much darker, more realistic Penguin, but I just love how chibi it looks!
-sigh- Alas, but maybe this is just me... But, of course, that means I love the work of Tim Sale! *drools over the Mad Hatter pic...*
I like Tim Sale's art. Dark Victory looked great except for two things -
1. The Penguin. Sorry but he looks like crap.
2. The Joker. Hate when they do his mouth that big. The grin is exaggerated, not the entire mouth.
Other than that I didn't really have a problem with this set, other than a few costume choices, like Arsonal. But I like his card so forget it.
Was playing Knights vs Titan and my opponent had out his Titan Nightwing so I whipped out mine and told him my costume looked cooler. I think he won that game though. So I guess looking cooler isn't always better.
I'm glad they broke away from the more "traditional" comic book art that they had in alot of marvel cards. Maybe it's 'cause I wasn't around back then, but alot the "classic" art cards just look ugly and old to me.
So far I'm very impressed with the DC artwork. I've never been a fan of DC, so I had no idea their artists got this good.
And yes, the penguin is a GREAT peice of art. Best work in the set, hands down.
