I wanna start playing this now. It seems interesting from what I've seen. What should I buy first for example. Should I buy the Spiderman vs. Doc Ock starter or the Batman vs Joker starter. Should I just buy boosters?
I also don't know any of the rules. So I'm guessing it would be best to buy the starter. ^_^
And if any you don't mind could guys tell me how the game works? Thanx very much.
Well reading the starter, and getting a friend to start with you and go through it helps a bunch. Once you read the starter and play a few games it goes smoothly.
I would probably buy the DC starter over the Spidey starter. The reason being that you can supplement your decks with boosters whereas there are no Spidey boosters (yet) to boost the Spidey Friends and Syndicate cards you'll get. So I'd start with DC and go from there.
If you start thinking about boxes - I would recommend 1-2 and then STOP, build decks online or research and see what you want to play, and then go about trading and hunting singles down from there. Buying boxes ultimately seems to really be useless after the 3rd box or so (and I'd probably recommend stopping after 2, esp if you're tight on cash).
Okay so when I buy the DC starter get some boosters with it aswell. But If I wanted to play the Marvel side just buy booster and not the spidey starter.
Well... you could get the other Marvel starter but it's not really necessary. The advantage of any starter is that you can get a couple little decks together and you can start teaching yourself and others how to play.
Beyond that I'd just trade, hunt for specific cards as well as pick up boosters here and there. Buying boxes is the most efficient way to get boosters but after a box or two, you have all the C and UC and then you're basically paying 3.50 or whatever for a random rare which... isn't all that great and you're better off just hunting for Rare A or Rare B as opposed to playing the lottery... I mean I bought 7 boxes of Marvel, I'm a Doom player, and I got no Boris character cards. When you learn about Doom, you'll find out that Boris is crucial. I also only snagged 1 Savage Beatdown which is one of the biggest cards in the game currently... had I been buying boxes to acquire just those cards... pretty pointless.
Some other tips:
1) Don't buy Savage Beatdowns, there are other cards that are nearly as good that are commons. Use them instead until SB is cheap.
2) For deck ideas, try the deck forum, but the best place to find advice is in the Strategy section - particularily if you like Doom, Arkham or LOA to name a few. Villains get a lot of support in that forum and if you have the patience to read through a bunch of stuff, you'll have so many ideas you won't know what to do with yourself.
Cards from Marvel (assuming you'll be buying a DC starter and thus will be stronger in DC for a while) that you'll want:
1) Flying Kick (C)
2) Acrobatic Dodge (C)
3) Nasty Surprise (C)
4) Surprise Attack (C)
5) Teamup cards (All UC, several different versions, the most helpful of which would be Marvel Teamup)
6) Not So Fast (UC)
7) Overload (UC)
8) Swift Escape (UC)
These are just some common and uncommon plot twists that will really help a variety of decks... it would be these that would make buying Marvel worthwhile as you'll be getting these plus some good trades with the rares you pull (and perhaps you'll get enough stuff to start building Marvel-centric decks) anywho... guess that should help some. =)
Thanx very much Magneto Rising. So how do you duel online? With like some sort of program. Like with yugioh or duel masters. Or I could just use AIM or the chatroom. ^_^ Again thank you very much for the help.
well, the game is pretty fast-paced. the environment is not one where a few themes rule all (i.e. YGO), instead each team has its unique strengths and weaknesses. Of course, there's always one deck that stands out from the others... but this game is already deep enough where not everyone uses the "best deck" and can still win.
currently, there are 13 main teams (including brotherhood, doom, fantastic four, sentinels, spider-friends, sinister syndicate, xmen, arkham inmates, gotham knights, league of assassins, and teen titans), 4 mini teams (skrulls, deathstroke [slade], negative zone, and fearsome five) and several unaffiliated folks (i.e. Apocalypse, Onslaught, Juggernaut, Trigon, Etrigan, etc.) combine the fact that ye can mix and match these teams (i.e. w/marvel teamup or world's finest) and you've a many many ways to play!
Magneto,
That was a great post - thanks for the advice!
I purchased a DC starter last week. I hoping to trade some of my extra stuff for cards to supplement a GK deck. It's always good to know what sorts of cards I should look for.
My plan is probably to get 1-2 decks and just have them on hand to play. My thoughts were GK (because I like the characters and they were in the DC starter) and Sentinels (because I'm a huge Sentinel fan in HeroClix). Don't know if I'll make it, but I at least have a start on the GK through the starter deck.
Thanks for the advice, everyone, and keep it coming.
Sentinels are a little tricky because of the volume that you need. The typical deck relies on a HUGE volume of Wild Sentinels, Mark IVs along with some rare plot twists and locations... it's just a little tricky to get some of them... not too bad though (you really DON'T need Trask, Kelly, MicroSentinels etc - some of the trickier rares).
It's prob easier just to consult through AIM - any questions, just zap me at GCNStorm.
I'm most likely going to stick with GK for now and try to pick up some more cards. I have to flesh out that starter deck to 60 cards. At least now, I have 40 to build from.
Any thoughts on what my first additions should be?

If you're not into buying boxes (like me ;)) then you can buy full sets(4 of each) of these cards online for less than $10 or there are some online retailers that sells full sets of commons and uncommons for about $20-$30.
Have fun with this game!!
Also its a good idea to have a card reference guide that shows all the cards, when making decks. I beleive "Hero Player" magazine has one (for Marvel only)
