Since its 0530 and I cant sleep I figured Id try and get a general feel for the reception an online version of Vs. would get.
I know about MTGPlay and whatnot but Im talking about something similar to MTGO or LotRO. You would pay for digital cards and have official tournaments and prize support.
Online CCGs have yet to be proven as a viable business model.
I probably would participate to some extent. The argument that "I'm not buying something that doesn't really exist" has been discussed previously when both LotR and MtG went online. It is practically no different than spending money on other forms of entertainment and having nothing to show for it (i.e. going to the movies, paying for cable television in your home, etc.). I play MTGO and used to play LotR online (sold my LotR online cards for real money when I got out).
One cool thing about LotR online is that they have tournaments where they pay out real cash and you can earn points to participate in their Worlds competition. Sort of like if UDE had a PCQ online, or even a 10k.
I think TCG's online looks like the future, but it would need some work. This is how it should work:
- Fee between $15 - $20 per Year (Kinda like X-Box live)
- You start with a total # of Credits, used to enter Tournaments online, and get more product (Let's say it costs 3 credits to enter; and you start with 50)
- Once each Set is released, you get 4 - Digital Packs & a Starter Deck (If its available in that set)
- You can trade cards/tokens with Players online (Kinda like an eBay sorta thing)
- You can sell back cards to the (What I call) "Infinite Card Pool" for Tokens if you're low on them.
- In Tournaments, you can earn Packs & Tokens & Promos.
So, for Vs. System Online, here is how I'd set it up
- $20 Yearly Fee
- You start with 30 Credits, 1 of each Starter Deck, 4 packs of each Set Released (So, 12 - Packs, 3 - Decks)
- It costs you 3 Credits to enter a Tournament. You enter, finish 8th out of 32. You earn 15 Credits & 3 - Packs
- Once your year is up, you can either renew, or end your online TCG experience.

Worse. Business. Model. Ever.
You do know the point of any business is to make money right?
I wouldn't play VS online. My budget is pretty limited anyway, and if I have to choose between real VS cards and virtual ones, I'll buy real ones.
Have any of you checked out StarChamber? www.StarChamber.net It's a unique CCG that's strictly online, and uses a board in combination with cards. It's fun (there's a free trial), but I haven't bought a starter deck yet because their $20, and that could buy a lot of VS cards...
