my opponent flips
avalon space station
discards a jean grey
graps a rogue (4)
I respond by flipping phantom zone
activating and removing the one jean grey
I then have a blast on avalon discarding a bizarro
avalon is replaced with cerebro my opponet responds
by activateing cerebro and drawing 1 jean grey and 1 other card which goes on the bottom of the deck. my opponent discards the second jean grey.
I remove the
2nd jean grey and replace PZ.
now am I right that jean still comes into play and can I have an official ruling on why?
I know this question has been anwsered alot but I still do not understand.
First, you need to slow down. You reacted to some actions too quickly (or too late as I'll get to). I'll assume it is the controller of Avalon's priority (i.e. you've already finished your build and it is now your opponent's (controller of Jean Grey's)?
When Avalon is activated, the Jean Grey is sent to the KO pile but your opponent needs to pass priority to you before grabbing Rogue. If you pass back instead of flipping and passing back priority, your opponent is capable of recruiting Jean Grey right then (you are now on an empty chain). So... assuming that you flipped and activated at the proper time, then both players pass until you get to the empty chain. Jean Grey is removed from play.
Cerebro is activated and your opponent does nothing more, passing to you. You don't have anything so you pass back. Cerebro resolves, getting the Jean Grey into the KO pile. At this point, you are on an empty chain and priority is with your opponent. If your opponent decides to recruit Jean Grey at this point, there is nothing you can do to stop it because the recruit restriction has been met. You cannot activate Phantom Zone's effect until priority is passed back to you (which would be when Jean Grey's recruit effect is put on the chain).
You can chain to the recruit of Jean Grey with Phantom Zone to remove the Jean Grey in the KO pile, but as I said, it won't stop the recruit. Assuming you do this and both players pass twice, Jean Grey will be recruited.
The short answer to your question is that you don't have priority after Cerebro until too late.
First step: He activates Avalon Space Station, discarding Jean Grey and targeting a Rogue in his KO pile. He passes priority to you.
Second step: You activate Phantom Zone, targeting his Jean Grey in the KO pile and chain to that with Have a Blast, discarding Bizarro. You pass priority.
Third: Your opponent passes priority. Have a Blast resolves, destroying Avalon Space Station and putting Cerebro into his resource row face down.
OK, stop here for a second. It is possible to activate Cerebro at this point intending to discard a Jean Grey if it 'hits'. However, this would not be a smart play as the chain is not empty yet. The proper play would be to pass. So, I will continue with that play.
Fourth: Opponent and you pass. Phantom Zone resolves removing Jean Grey in the KO pile from play.
You are now on an empty chain (which is opportune for the opponent.)
Fifth: Opponent activates Cerebro and passes priority to you. You pass back. Cerebro resolves with the end result of a Jean Grey in the KO pile.
You are again on an empty chain. Jean Grey, Phoenix Force can be recruited at this point. (it is an empty chain and Jean Grey is in the KO pile). Again, I am assuming your opponent is playing with the best possible moves.
Sixth: Opponent announces recruitment effect of Jean Grey, Phoenix Force, placing Jean Grey in the chain zone and passes priority to you.
Seventh: You replace Phantom Zone, targeting the Jean Grey in the KO pile. You pass to your opponent who passes. Jean Grey in the KO pile is removed from play. However, Jean Grey, Phoenix Force is still being recruited. Its requirements were met. Opponent passes to you and you pass back. Jean Grey, Phoenix Force is recruited.
So, you can chain to Cerebro, but it will not stop what you intend to stop. My suggested play for this would be to not replace Phantom Zone, leaving the Jean Grey placed in the KO pile by Cerebro there and just remove it and the Jean Grey that is likely to be activated (and KO'd) next turn.
