As an ex magic player, I know I'm a jerk and I know what I like. And what I’d like to see is a character that makes people pay for discarding. I’m thinking
"When a player discards a card, that player loses 2 endurance."
This character would have to be a mid to late game drop so as to not be too powerful (4 drop).
The character would also have to be psychically or magically inclined to justify this awesome ability.
I’m thinking: scarlet witch, zatanna, dr. fate, Constantine, dr strange, clea, loki... someone like that. It may prove especially effective in an Arkham deck.
The potential for a deck surrounded on making a character discard and then pay for it would be very powerful and annoying. Think about museum heist, greater of two evils, cracking the vault, break you. Not to mention all those character abilities that require a discard.
the problem wth that is that is a card relivly the same as Megrim in Magic. And the worst thing UDE could do is start taking strategies and basic deck concepts from Magic. UDE however might incorparate some type of "discard mechanic" in some later sets but I don;tt hink it will happen for ahwile just by looking at the mechanics wich are being invented currently, they are all fresh and I think UDE wants to keep t that way.
i agree with the copying bit, but i dont think VS and Magic are similar enough game-play wise that this ability would play the same way as megrim. until VS has cards that allow numerous resource to be played "early" in the game, i dont think it has anything to fear from those who would compare it to magic.
mr warlock- good to hear from you, hope you enjoyed the NC pre release. and i disagree about the # of cards discarded. there are plenty of cards out there you can use. AND even if you dont discard your opponents, or they discard, your still putting fear into them about discarding which may screw-up their strategy.
well to be fair Honky
you make me pretty uncomfortable
Mr. Pancake-
is the deck successful at discarding
or successful at winning
because currently discard themes seem annoying
and maybe a good side-theme
but i cant see it winning a match by itself
There are actually several methods of making discarding (or its equivalents) worth more. My favorite is Josef Witschi... if you can deplete your opponent's hand, he can KO a location and permanently reduce your opponent's resources. If you can make it work, it's downright evil. DE/LoA could force this to work by sending over Firepits.
Another option is to go with what I call the "Ladies of Discord". Using the Sinister Syndicate along with the female characters that force discards with breakthrough (Psylocke, Catwoman, Whisper A'Daire, and Mystique), you drain their hand until you can Sadistic Choice their board presence away. ^_^
canamrock- i see your point. discards one of my favourite strategies, but ive never been able to make it work competivly. i had a good deck going for a whil;e centered around Doom and overpower, where i would overpower, use rama tut to bring it back, the over power again...ad nauseum. this new underworld deck helps in a way, and hinders in a way. sinc ethe only way you can win in this fashion is emperor joker. i still find overpowering and discard work well together, and i want to try to make a doom/ underworld deck, using devils due to create MASSIVE Ko damage.
I think Marvel Knights/Gotham Knights is the best over-all team-up for a discard deck. Between Hell's Kitchen, Mystic Chain + Barbara Gordan, Catwoman, the best KO effects and some of the best pumps in the game, some of the best team-attack options (a mini-Bamf! in Dynamic Duo and a KO effect in GCPD Headquarters), plus two of the best character search cards in the game, plus plot twist control coupled with card draw, plus some of the best concealed characters in the game, you are talking about some serious shifts in card and board advantage happening simultaneously.
Each time you stun a character you will have the option, via some means or another, to KO it. If that character is Catwoman or has a Mystic Chain, you will be drawing a card and your opponent discarding a card. If Barb is out and the character is equipped, that is one extra card being drawn. If you KO the character via a card effect, the opponent loses that character, and, if Hell's Kitchen is out, another card from hand. A turn or two of this kind of punishing board swinging is going to be very effective, methinks.
The two teams complement each other quite well in many ways. With Dagger, Wild Ride, Midnight Sons and Alfred, getting your team-up will be quick and painless, and over the course of the game these cards and Bat Signal will be directly thinning your deck. The additional card-drawing from Detective Work, Mystic Chain, Catwoman, Barbara Gordan and so on will be grinding even quicker through your deck, and will be feeding such effects as Fizzle, Quick Kill and others.
This will be one of my serious decks when MK comes out.
Alright Ladies... Give Big Al a reason to play a deck that depletes the opponents hand, I'll show you Allen getting a buttload more swag... Like this nifty Ghost Rider shirt that I'm wearing right now or the mass MMK packs that Honky and Warlock "bought" for me. ;)
As Long as I can pull 3+ cards per turn from my opponent's hand, I can see it being viable and I can see me playing it. Just imagine how nifty that would be against Titans or Curve Sents... on second thought let's not. I have enough problems keeping Bastion and friends big.

Mumbles profanity under breath....
I would like to see some good discard effects, but they need to be implemented after the draw. Unfortunately, I don't think UDE would make anything that powerful, so decks based solely on the discard would be unable to truly mess around with the opponent. I do like the idea of teaming up MK/GK to more properly abuse Batgirl with Mystic Chain.
