If Apocalypse is about to KO a face-down Phantom Zone, if the other player flips it face-up and replaces it to remove a card in the KO'd pile from the game, does the replacement card still count as the same resource?
I think the game tracks the resource by card, rather than by slot, so the replacement would not be KO'd. However, I am not sure about this, and that's why I'm asking.
I believe I've read a similar example, where Apocalypse targeted a face-down Relocation. That Relocation was then flipped, used on a location the controller of Apocalypse controlled, and switched with it. Apocalypse then KOed...Relocation, which was now his player's own resource.
Following this line of logic, nothing would happen to the resource that replaced Phantom Zone, as Apoc would still be tracking the Phantom Zone. However, I'm aware that I'm relying on an anecdote rather than hard rules (Apoc doesn't have a FAQ entry), so hopefully someone can confirm or deny.
The resource Apocalypse is targeting is that specific resource (in this case, Phantom Zone). Replacing it means there is a different resource and Apocalypse will 'miss' that one. Besides which, when you replace, you're supposed to put the new resource to the right of your last placed resource, not in the actual space that you KO'd your resource from.
512.5 Some one-shot modifiers instruct a player to replace a resource. To replace a resource, its controller reveals it, then KO’s it. Then, if he or she did, that player puts the top card of his or her deck face down into his or her resource row where the KO’d resource was. That player may look at that card once it is in the resource row. (See rule 212.5g.)
Would have sworn it was to the right at some point (makes it far cleaner for game progress going to the right as well). Ah, well. Regardless, it is not the same resource as before.
I beleive that if a resource gets KO'd and not replaced you are not supposed to move another resource (from either next turn or attempting to tidy up the ones you have left) into that space.
I think it is like this so that the opponent can keep track of any that have been flipped back face down if they need to target it at any point.

Changed in the last rules iterations to make it more intuitive for the players. Most placed the new cards into the empty slot rather than on the end.
