Ruling is reversed but the problem remains...Soultions?
What can I say that has not been said?
Anyone who liked a single elim top 8 is wacked. I cannot tell you how many matches I have lost game one and won the next two. At least half…
I am glad UDE reverted.
But the problem with time and slow play should not be forgotten.I am guilty of slow play along with many others who take all the time they can to anaylize things like a chess player. Fix that problem UDE. People laugh off the idea of a chess clock but it has worked for hundreds of years in chess and it is simple when you get the hang of it. It actually helps me focus and be more efficient with my time. People take their time and are not efficient because they can be. Another possible change?
Use some kind of holder like scrabble trays so your resource cards are facing you but not face down. I’m sure we have all seen players look at each resource several times before making any decision. This would also help new players tremendously. In fact I give new players scrabble trays so they can just glance down and see what is in their resource row.As an aside; I watched the finals in NY and each turn seemed to take ten minutes. Do we want to discourage people from playing decks that require allot of thought? Encouraging off curve decks seems like an easy way out for UDE rather than encouraging alternate win decks. Anyone can run a swarm deck so that is good for new players but thus far I haves seen mostly decks like TNB in post july golden age.
In my opinion one game matches untill top 8 is fine. And actually it is essential at PCQs since they are twin format and you do not have time. The twin format is more grueling if you play in both but it is necisary to entice people like me who have to drive several hours.
You simpley can not have one game matches in the top 8 because then it becomes single elimination: that is allways an unpopular format.
the only thing that sucks about best of 3 is you only get an hour so if it goes 3 games the last game probably will only go a couple of turns. if 1 game swiss gets 30 minutes wouldn't it make sense to give 90 minutes for 3 game match?
That the only good point I see on this reversed ruling. I have been in that situation where I lost in the finals because he was at 33 and i was at 32 on turn 4. It is frustrating but motivates you to play faster next time and make sure your opponet is not stalling. Again I will point to my ideas of chess clocks. For those who do not know how it works you each have a clock with say 30 mins on it. your clock starts when your opponets turn ends and ends when you end it. Back and forth. So if you run out of time on you clock you lose the game.
Problem with that is it would rarely work. A minute for build, maybe, but with stuff like EMS you have to think and search and stuff. Combat after turn 5 is NEVER under a minute. Maybe if you made it 3-5, but definitley not one.
For brevity I will use the Acronym SCSC which wil refer to slapping the button on the chess clock to stop the clock on the person who has priorities time which automatically starts the clock on the opponents.
Say Im playing against a Brave and the bold player. Proably the next most complicated deck. It is my initiave. My build. I cast Alfred. Ask for a response. My opponent has none.
I cast boris. Ask for a response. None.
I attempt to activae boris. Ask if my opponent has a response. He says yes. At this point I press the chess clock stopping the time on my side and starting the side on my opponents.
(SCSC)
He uses utility belt on hank hal to negate boris. Asks for a response: none. He passes SCSC
I attempt to recruit dr.doom. I announce I will flip a fizzle back down. Ask for a response. He has one. SCSC
Flips flame trap Discards two cards. Ask for a response. I have one.
SCSC
I atviated robot sentry. No response. Activate glorious godfry targeting roy harper.
He has a response.
SCSC
Activates roy harper targeting Golrious Godfry. No response. Taps one character. No response. Taps two. No response. Taps a third. I respond:
SCSC
I activate Shimmer. No response. Play press the attack on Alfred. No response.
Alfred is activated returning to my hand. Flame trap resolves.
Dr. Doom comes into play. Fizzle is flipped down. I pass.
Etc…
Only problem I see with that is they could stall by pretending to have a response and thinkng about it for a while, and then saying they have none. Maybe when asking for a response you SCSC and if they have none they SCSC? Anyways, I like your idea. Only problem is UDE having to make chess clocks available in massive quantities for tournaments all over the world.
Yes, but chess clocks cost like 20 bucks and the stores could get them for cost. Most PCQs have about 20 particpants so that is only ten clocks a store would need. Im sure as a TO I would pay 100$ personally to save allot of time related headaches.
True, there are many players who make their decisions slowly, but that's okay. The point of the game is to THINK. Otherwise the game would not rely on skill and the player, only on who has better cards.
Adding a clock to time each persons turn, limiting the amount of time they can take for fear of losing due to time, is NOT a good idea.
What could be a good idea is having clocks so that the player knows how long they are taking, and have taking too long on certain decisions be considered stalling. Then a judge can come and deal with the situation. But definetely not a game loss. Just a warning or something.
Its wierd playing with a clock at first but you get used to it within a few games. You could give a warning if your time runs out , then do the two turns thing to finsh off the game. If you get two warnings then you shoud get a GL, maybe. Im not saying its The solution but chess takes even more thought and that works for them.
I agree, I've played some people who stall the hell out of games with few poit leads, my attack initiative, their build. They would keep readjusting their formations, not letting me attack.
I'd like to slap all those who thrive on suck cheapness.
A chess clock isn't a bad ides, and I may try it. same goes for the scrabble things.
