yeah nobody that judged a preview got a playmat as compensation. If they did then that TO isn't playing by the rules. We usually manage to snag some of the EAs but not always. At a 10k I judged we got all the EAs except for the top finish EAs a special "judge/vollunteer" deck tin, and a couple boxes of product from the TO. It was pretty nice for standing around for a couple of days talkin bout VS.
just wanted to confirm that this was the official way things were being done. it is how we did things, again, based on the sheet that was sent with the products.
the confusion though was whether we as judges are going to simply be given play mats there as compensation for us not getting the chance at that in our events or if we can simply try to win them at the big events.
I have judged at a couple of pre-releases and a couple of $10ks, in the mid-west. Usually, we get packs and the participation EAs for judging a pre-release. We do not get the other swag, such as mats, tins, shirts, or prize EAs. At $10ks the TO usually gives out packs, several assorted EAs and sometimes the generic, {orange}, UDE mat and tin. Hope that helps answer the question.
Beginning with the $10,000 Championship at Wizard World Chicago, all judges at Pro Circuits and $10,000 Championships held in North America will be given a play mat and deck box from the current set as a "thank you" for helping with the event. These are in addition to the exclusive judge-only Extended Art promos that are distributed to these events.
So how do you volunteer to help? Simple - just contact the organizer by email by going to the tournament page and following the links to the event.
Click on the Upcoming Schedule, and then on "$10,000 Championship at Wizard World Chicago".
Voluteer staff is limited, so you may not always be selected. To maximize your chances, you can:
1) Pass the Vs. System Level 2 rules test at a $10,000 Champs or Pro Circuit.
2) Volunteer to work local tournaments like PCQs and Sneak Previews.
3) Always be professional when judging - dressed neatly, on time, meets commitments (ie don't leave early when judging a two-day event like a $10,000 Champs).
Going forward, judges at 10Ks and PCs will receive playmats/decktins from the latest set in addition to EA promo cards and anything else that the PTO decides to throw in.

Does this mean I just have to contact the TOs for PCQs, I am considered to have sent an 'application' to be a judge?

I am appreciative of the UDE company's efforts to reward Judges at the 10K and Pro level. But I am going to say that the Judges that put in their time running PCQ's and Sneak Previews are being put at odds with no reasonable chance to get a shot at Mats, tins and such that player have. If we run an event on the local level so that the players have their shot we lose. I for one don't believe this is a proper way to reward the Judges of Sneak Previews. But hey, I will live with it. I love the game, I love the players and the present rewards are nice...this is just an observation. However, please note that other competing CCG companies do give out Judge exclusive and allow them to also revive player level rewards at their Sneaks & Qualifiers. I am just curious why UDE does not.
Anyway, UDE thanks for a great game and all the rewards. I don't want to sound like a complainer.

Well first off only the top finisher of a PCQ gets a playmat so I don't think that would be an appropriate compensation for a judge. Players should feel that they are earning the higher level prizes, and to just give them away to judges kind of cheapens them. However, for a Sneak Preview I agree that playmats for judges isn't so terrible of an idea

Push come to shove you are a volunteer. You were not coerced into judging. You knew what you were getting into. To be so dramatic as to imply that judges are cheated when the comp isn't spectacular is ridiculous. I judge cause I like to help people, I like to teach and help people learn, and of course I suck. I mean if you thought you had a shot at winning then what are you doing judging. I for one can't put in the time or energy to be really competitive but I play when I can. I judge so I can still be a part of the competitive scene without all the pressure of being a player. Maybe your the one pro that loves to judge, but if you can win then you should play. If not then judge, and don't expect to be treated like a first place finisher cause your not. Your a judge.

UDE is still pretty young, and its not like there are to many companies that have as big a judging program as UDE. Really there is only one, so I don't think that its fair to say there is any precedence or expectations here.

my 2 cents [/b]
Wow! harsh. I was only pointing out observations. Cool down. I never suggested that I as a judge receive prizes reserved for top winners. Nor did I claim to be a top player. Your comments that I feel cheated are very presumptive. As I already stated (and you misrepresented me) I love the game and my players. I am here to help them. So slow down on your comments, please.
However, I will point out again that I only suggest that judges receive 'judge' only rewards at this level, not just at the 10K & PC level. I am not going to be bitter about it to UDE. I was making friendly notes about the rewards and how they compare to other CCG's. And just to clarify, there is more than one other company out there doing as I have noted. Please keep the discussion on a pleasant tone rather then a blacklase. Thanks for your comments. Still freinds I hope? Like I said I am not going to get all worked up about. I will be back at my store and playing, judging and collecting my heart out. This is not going to warp me into a fit where I leave the game.
