Should/could UDE make comic-only cards without getting burned to a crisp?
Okay, so the fourth alternate art comic-exclusive Vs card is coming out next month (Batman, if you haven't seen), and it got me to thinking. Would it be WAY out of good sense to make a new card that could ONLY be obtained via the comic market? Like, say to launch the new X-Men set, they released a single card (or a group, who knows) that would only be available by picking up an X-Men book that month, and by no other means, except for promotions from UDE, like HL, PCQs, etc. Would people go nuts and roast UDE for doing that? Would card quality matter here, or would people still be upset if the card was like, a 1/1 1-drop Beak with no powers?
I think it would be cool and help give a little push to get more Vs. players who DON'T read comics to give em a shot, but it's just as likely someone would drop 50 bucks to scoop up all the copies and sell the cards on ebay. What do you think?
Originally posted by ZeroTolerence I don't like the idea. It's already bad enough that some actually playable cards (I use playable loosely) are starter deck exclusive.
That was actually the basis for the idea at first, since there's already a bunch of cards that are limited in quantity, via the starters. Still, I don't think it would be THAT bad to get a treat or two in a new card via comics. Any way to bring the comic and gaming world a bit closer together is okay in my book
Partly because of collectors. Collectors will grab the exclusives, and, if the card is good enough, only the rich will be able to afford it, and that will create a further rift between players.
I dont like the idea of releasing exclusive and promo cards that are not available in expansion sets. It all seems a bit yugioh to me. I would really hate vs to start down that road!
i think UDE themselves do not want to release exclusive cards. the starter exclusive cards are very available to everyone, they are not expensive, and the odds of getting them is very easy since each starter will contain the exact same cards.
now, i already own the spider-man 7-drop alternate art, and i just wish that all these comic inserts are EA alternate art, just like the Hawkeye promo, makes you want to have them than just a simple alternate art thats not even foil.
A good way to piss everyone off is to do something like this. It's also a phenomenal way to kill your game. In addition it could possibly cause me to turn to violence. Which is something they do not want. Really.
I may make a more constructive post later. I try to keep it broadly 50/50 between genius and idiocy.
Personally, I like the idea of putting cards in comics. The game obviously ties in with the books, and that one card may be the catalyst for more players to start the game.
As far as making "exclusive" cards, I agree that is a bad idea. EA/Alt Art versions of existing (or soon to exist) cards seems to me the best for a comic freebie insert. On that note, wouldn't it be cool to get a few of the new X-Men cards in a new issue of X-men...Sort of like a mini-pre-release? I think it'd be fun, and not game breaking. No one loses.
why not this, instead of releasing exclusive cards in comics. why not add a miniature comic book to the starters.
also how about a comic book for each set that has an exclusive in it, but the comic is more of a comic encyclopedia. listing profiles of the teams and its members for that set. now i think that would be cooler considering a lot of people don't really care to read comics but they want to knwo some things about the characters they play with.
