I have only recently started playing Versus, buying the Batman starter deck(s), and am contemplating what sort of deck would be a decent yet inexpensive/fun deck to run. Being a complete newbie, I have no idea what styles of decks are popular right now, but does anyone have any suggestions on easy-to-build, easy-to-play DC decks? Thanks muchly!
I am crazy, and would only give you janktastically bad advice, but GCPD Officers can do some insane tricks if you like to swarm. FatBat is a viable deck, and I think it is fairly cheap. I'll try to find a list for you...
... like I said, don't listen to me. Here's TBS's original build of FatBat, but you should prolly surf the Strategy section of this site to find something simpler:
Stu, the problem with GK Cop swarm builds is that they almost invariably tempt you to the cursed world of Alfred and Fizzle, which cost mad sums of money.
My recommendation for a GK-based deck depends a lot on three factors.
1) What sets can you easily pick up in your area?
2) How big are the collections of people you're likely to face?
3) Do you know what types of decks people around you play?
I've always recommended the Brotherhood as a good starting team, since they can do fairly well without needing any of their power rares. The Green Lantern and Avengers sets are good for starting with; Gotham Knights / Green Lantern can do well with a busted defensive build that only needs Sinestro and likes Fizzle. :)
Can you get a couple bat signals, a couple mountain stronholds, and some common characters from DC origins? Maybe some Flying kicks (also available in the FF/Doom starter) and some Megablasts? Oh yeah, and the actual "My Beloved" card. You would be well on your way...
To play straight Gotham, you can make a pretty decent deck just by picking up some DOR commons and uncommons. In fact, if you can find the original GK / Arkham starter, you'll be on your way to getting a good basic deck going. :)
Hay Andrewbircher - No one seriously suggested Alfred or Fizzle, and SqS is not a beginner's deck by any stretch of the imagination. No matter how much you like it. The TBolt Tactics deck is cheap too, but its not a beginner's deck.
I would recommend a 100% reservists Avengers deck. The only required rares are however many Mansions you decide to run. You get the insane power of Heroes in Reserve and Call Down the Lighning as well as a set of characters that can go toe to toe with any team in the game.
The major pitfall is that you might be exploring the mechanics of the game a bit too early. Reservists encourage you to play "bad" by putting characters into your resource row and play plot twists from your hand.
For a game concept deck:
I've always liked the Xmen as a teaching tool. The essential rares (some of the characters) are fairly easy to pickup. You can play stuff like the Polaris/Archangel combo as well as Professor X (7) and Gambit to play well on defense. Bamf!, Cerebro and Children of the Atom are nice cards, definitely play them if you have them, but not required for a functional deck.
I have a better suggestion, figure out which team you like, buy a box or two of that set then build from there. If you are not having fun then why are you playing? Go for the teams that you like. That should give you plenty of cards to try and trade with. You can get a box of boosters for under $50 online and a few good rares can pay for the box if you don't want them. I would never recommend that someone new to the game go after Fizzle or Savage Beat Down, there are too many other alternatives. I also would not recommend going after an Army deck like Sentinels or GCPD because while most of the cards are "cheap" at 1-2 dollars (here those army cards are premium even if they are commons because they are popular) you could have bought a couple of boxes for the same amount you spent to build the deck. Check out VS Universe for popular decks and there costs and you will see what I am talking about.
Uh.. guys, the problem right now is he has a Batman starter deck. I don't think he's going to have access to all those cards from Origins that you guys are mentioning. If I was testing out a game, I would NOT want to drop any more money then I have to. Stupid INTIAL D ccg taught me that. I dropped a good amount of money and I found out 2 weeks later that the game died because of a bad deal.
This isn't going to happen with VS, but he may end up not liking the game or having other commitments that turns out to be more important and costly. There has been a lot of thread discussing how new players or getting new players to join a game. Maybe he should read some of those threads.
Regardless, here's a thought... If your store has a "free" bin look for things in there, sometimes you will find some goodies. Either that or play with your friend's deck. They can hopefully give you a lesson or two, you can see what a thought out constructed deck is like then go and look in the "free" bin. This is a little more pricy, but buy a box and try to build a deck from that. You will also get some things to trade as well.
