Walter Kovacs made mention of this in another thread. Something about the manhunters feared he would be considered for GL Candidacy. Where does this info come from?
Ever since reading that statement I've been boggling over the way his powers would manifest as a GL. I think they would be unlike any other lantern.
This also brings to mind Batman and Wonder Woman. I can't even begin to imagine the type of constructs Batman would create. Boggles the mind.
I'm honestly not familiar with that story arc, but it would be VERY cool.
It reminds me of a scene in the HUSH series where Bats and Supes are fighting, and Bats pulls out a green ring from his utility belt. I instantly thought "Holy Craps, Bat's got a GL ring!?!"
Yeah, it was kryptonite, which makes more sense...But I'm a die hard GL fan, and thought that would've been the bee's knees!
There's a story, and the name escapes me, of a Green Lantern watching over Kal-El's spacecraft as he was flung from Krypton. The idea was that the Guardians determined that someday he would become the ultimate Green Lantern. Something about a perfect genetic structure, IIRC. Hopefully, someone else can recall this better than I.
(a) In one story, they basically relate that Supes was the FIRST choice to receive the ring that eventually went to Hal. Supes turned it down and had his memory wiped and then it went to Hal [since Hal and Guy were both 'tied' for second, but Hal was closer]
(b) There is an Elseworld where Krypton is not destroyed. Kal becomes the GL of Krypton, and eventually goes to Earth, yada yada yada ...
Basically Supes + GL ring = the nuts ...
It allows him to travel through space ... the ring acting as a 'back up' when he's not near a yellow sun. Heck, he probably could have the ring approximate the radiation emmited by a yellow sun [not 100% ... it wouldn't be yellow but that doesn't mean the other properties couldn't be similar].
He likely could use the ring to protect himself from Kryptonite radiation.
I'm not 100% on if the GL ring is waek to Magic or not ...
But the basic premise is that the Guardians kept an eye on Kal as a young child because they knew he'd become the greatest of heros or something like that.

Just think how sick that would be if he was actually capbale of doing these things.
I'd like to see a modern version with the same premise. That would be cool.
I always wondered if Krypton had a GL/who was the GL for that sector, and figured that could possibly the most powerful person ever.
I dunno, I never did my homework (I'm sorry, I don't feel like going through GL/OA history AND Superman/Krypton History). One of my friends said that Kyrpton may have exploded before the Guardians created the GLC (meaning the 'GL' for that sector was a Manhunter) or that GL was stupid w/ the rest of krypton and didn't leave/died.
There was also an Elseworld story where Bruce Wayne gets the GL ring called In Darkest Knight.
It was pretty crumby.
I like to think that Bats has the strongest will in the DCU, but he isn't without fear, which is why Hal got the nod. I think Supes has plenty of fears too, which I think makes him less desireable than Hal too.
Mind you, John Stewart and Kyle aren't really fearless either.
In addition to what has been mentioned above, in DC One Million, Superman was hibernating in the sun for millenia, and was awoken when a GL ring was tossed in. He came out, used the power of the ring and the immense amount of solar power he had stored up (he was glowing bright hot yellow, he was so full of energy), and saved the day. Then, he used that same said power to go back to the Kryptonian system, recreated Krypton as it was before it exploded, his parents and all, and lived happily ever after.
So with a ring (and some help from thousands of years of stored up solar energy) he is a god.
As a really big GL fan, I'll give the once over again.
The Guardians of the Universe determined that the offspring of Jor-El would be capable of gaining great power due to his particular genetics combined with a Yellow or brighter sun. Kal-El was the one to have perfect genetics and alos lacked the flaw of most Kryptonians, he could leave his homeworld and not die. This ear marked him for potential service as a GL of his sector. The Manhunters found out about this and determined that they must possess the child that he Guardians found so interesting.
They hatched their own plans to take the child and use him for their own purposes; this was interrupted as Krypton began its "meltdown". Through covert actions they learned Jor-El planned to launch the child into space headed for the nearest place best suited for him, Earth. The Manhunters had known this was the best place for the child, so they prepared to intercept the small spaceship headed for Earth.
Fortunately, the GL of Sector 2813 (Tomar Re) was returning from a deep space mission to gather a rare element that would have stabilized Krypton. He got there too late to prevent the planet from being destroyed, but he noticed the small spacecraft leaving orbit. As the Manhunter ship attemped to engage it, Tomar Re swooped into to protect the tiny vessel. In the end, the GLC won the day forcing a retreat so that Kal-El could journey savely to Earth under the protection of the Guardians. The Manhunters had pleanty of operatives there, and decided to continue their operation in secret away from the scutiny of the Guardians. Thus, turning most of Smallville into sleeper agents...
As Clark Kent grew up, he would have unknown contact with the GLC. The Guardians had kept watch over the child and intervened through others in order to thwart Manhunter plans. This would continue until the day Clark was teleported to the crash site of Abin Sur's spacecraft. Abin had given guidelines to the ring to find the perfect man on Earth to wear the ring... the ring chose Clark.
Abin scanned him and found him to be Kryptonian. The Guardians forbid a being from one sector to be the GL of another, so Clark was dismissed for being a Kryptonian. His mind was wiped and he was returned to Metropolis. (My notes indicate he was actively Superman at this time.)
With time growing short, Abin searched for the best human to fill that need. Guy and Hal were the ones it chose. Since the ship crashed in the Sierra Madres, Hal was closer being in California while Guy was in New York. Abin picked the closest one.
Later on, Superman would finally meet the Guardians and astound them with how much power he did have.
And yes, there were some elseworlds stories of Superman and Batman getting the ring. There are a few more like that with other heroes and different takes like if Guy had gotten the ring first instead of Hal. Then there is DC One Million, too.
One other story, non-elseworlds, appeared in the Superman/Batman title. I'll have to brush up on it as I didn't read it per-se, it involved Batman & Superman shutting down the Justice League (Still not quite sure as I did not read the actual issues). However, Supes did gain possession of John Stewart's Power Ring for the length of that arc. It was returned at the end, but he did indeed use it.
Suffice to say that Supes with a Power Ring is nuts powerful... and he can use it to protect himself from his personal weaknesses.
Though I wonder what would happen if there was yellow kryptonite... there probably is, after all.
Edit: Hah! I just googled it. There is a Gold Kryptonite... it takes away all his super powers.
LOL, bring it on GL Superman... I'm ready for you.

Yellow kryptonite existed pre-crisis ... it could permanently rob a Kryptonian of their powers. However it was only VERY recently that post-crisis saw multi colored versions of the K ... so the only time that Supes would have to worry about Yellow K he'd have the 'new rules' applied of being able to overcome the yellow weakness.
