All I can say is this is going to be great. Probably not as good as Batman Begins, but I'm ignoring the naysayers that are claiming Bryan Singer (X-men 1 and 2) is screwing this movie up. I mean, look at the trailer! John Williams theme playing, Marlon Brando returns as Jor-El (yes, you heard me right), Clark Kent jumping across the cornfield, the people of Metropolis staring into the sky.......only minor complaint is no sign of Lex Luthor (played by the brilliant Kevin Spacey), but I'm sure he'll be in the full trailer.
yeah I mean I'm not sure how I felt about the trailer. it is blatantly obvious that they casted that superman guy because he looks freakin exactly like Christopher Reeves. which frankly isn't good enough for this generation of film, he just looks too old school and weak.
This preview does nothing to relieve my fears that this movie isn't going to be anything more than a rehash of the old Superman movies with better special effects.
Every other superhero movie series is filled with inside references for longtime fans of the original comics, but Superman always gets stuck doing generic superhero stuff and battling Luthor over and over again. Superman has a great rogues gallery of villains. Why won't those Hollywood types take advantage of it?
Oh well. At least the video game tie-in is supposed to have some nice references. :(
Well, we can't be sure that another Superman villian won't appear. I mean, they just added Emma Frost and Monet to the X-men 3 cast so they could add another villian to this movie. And they could just be keeping another villian underwraps.

We can only hope. If this movie does have another classic Superman villain (and it's not Zod or some other lame, evil Kryptonian), it will get my instant approval, no matter how much it might otherwise suck.
Most people seem to be speculating Metallo, since he appears in the video game. Of course, the Spider-man movie video games had villians not in the movies, so that hurts that argument.
However, the budget is $250,000,000. I can't help but think Superman showing off his powers wouldn't exactly cost that much.
Now for the Superman Returns video game, let's hope it'll finally be the awesome Superman video game we've been waiting for. I still pity those who bought Superman 64. Hopefully they'll make the game open like GTA or Hulk: UD. Being able to fly all over Metropolis would be so cool.
In earlier drafts of the script it was Lex and Braniac [which is a 'team-up' that shows up every once in a while ...]
The only reason that wouldn't seem like a good idea is because they are doing Brainy on Smallville [although, honestly, they are REALLY going with the 'Braniac = Eradicator' route so far ... mixing those two into one].
Now, here's a list of Supes villains with a movie rating:
Bizzarro - With Lex as the main villain, and Supes coming 'back from the dead' ... this would actually make sense. Lex tries to clone Superman so that he'll have his 'own' after Supes is dead. UNFORTUNATELY ... both Superman 3 AND Superman 4 had the 'evil' version of Superman [heck even 2 if you count Zod and his goons]. Bizarro would work well, but not this time.
Braniac - Outside of the reservations of having him also on Smallville ... it would still be an interesting villain
Doomsday - They'd probably reduce him to a Bane like part which just wouldn't be right. Doomsday was a one note character ... everything he's done since killing Superman has been watered down. It's incredibly ironic that a beast that evolves whenever it's defeated gets EASIER to beat in each ensuing fight.
Metallo - Could work as a second tier villain with Lex as the manipulator behind the scenes. The whole Kryptonite Heart is the kicker, more or less.
Cyborg Superman - They'd have to go through the 'Reign' thing to justify his existance ... even if the movie is about Superman returning from the grave, it wouldn't fit. Otherwise, they might as well stick with Metallo since ability wise, they are more or less interchangeable.
Toyman, Prankster - No, No
Darkseid - Arguably a Superman Villain ... but it would be hard to do him Justice without making it a 'space' movie that was more about New Genesis and Apokalips than anything else.
Parasite - He'd be interesting to see on the big screen, and can be made a credible threat to Superman ... but it's just another meh villain really ...
Honestly, I'm a fan of Supes ... but he doesn't have many stand out villains that don't require a massive backstory to justify ...
Manchester Black or that type of character would be interesting ... the guy that tries to prove that Supes 'doesn't have what it takes' and can be pushed to do the wrong thing, etc ...
Or the Conduit/Ruin type of character that knows who Superman is and uses it against him [although it would be hard to give them the extra emotional punch since the 'character from the past' would be 'character introduced at some point earlier in the movie'.]
Man, everyone underestimates how complex Parasite is. He's a loser and a wannabe who turns into the ultimate mooch. There's a lot of symbolic character development there.
Well, after watching it I hope is does turnout like Batman: Begins. I went to it thinking it would suck and I really liked it afterwards. So far I don't like Superman Returns.
After watching Superman and Superman II, I am looking forward to seeing Superman Returns though!
I know I will always hat the look of the costume though.
