Our first round match features one of our bigger names in the tournament (and recent Tech Upgrade guest) “BigSpooky” against Tharyel. After a bit of friendly jabbing and a complaint about the feature match chairs at the Pro Circuit, both Tharyel and BigSpooky were ready to roll it up and start the match. Spooky won the roll and thought for a moment and chose to take evens.

Match 1
Turn 1
Tharyel laid his resource and passed. Spooky brought down his and came out with Dagger. Dagger pinged for 1 and the totals were 49-50.

Turn 2
Spooky placed his resource, flipped Midnight Sons from his row and played his Wild Ride. He thought for a moment and searched out Nightcrawler and placed him in front of Dagger. Tharyel laid his resource and played a Puppet Master. Nightcrawler swung into PM, and Puppet Master activated to tap down Dagger. 46-48.

Turn 3
Tharyel played Dr. Light (3) behind Puppet Master and passed to Spooky. Spooky laid down a resource and played Wolverine (revealing Mikado and Mosha). Spooky put Nightcrawler behind Wolverine and Dagger to the right of Nightcrawler forming an L. Dr. Light attacked into Dagger. Spooky chose not to reinforce and took the 3 endurance loss. Puppet Master activated tapping down Nightcrawler. Wolverine took priority and swung himself at Puppet Master. The attack was good and Tharyel went down 6 endurance. 40-45.

Turn 4
Spooky laid his resource and placed Mikado and Mosha in front of Dagger, and passes. Tharyel flips a Doomstadt from his row and follows it up by flipping a Faces of Doom. He searched out everyone’s favorite Dr., the Diabolic Genius, and flipped down Faces. Tharyel brings out a Reign of Terror to return Wolverine, Logan to Spooky’s hand. Nightcrawler attacks into Puppet Master, who activates to tap down Mikado and Mosha. Tharyel takes his 3 and spooky passes his attack. Dr. Light swings into Dagger and then Dr. Doom swings into Mikado and Mosha for 3 and 7 endurance loss on both attacks respectively. Mikado is sent to the KO’d pile for the turn. 37-35.

Turn 5
Tharyel lays his resource and thinks for a moment. He plays out Poison Ivy (2) in front of Puppet Master, and then uses Puppet Master’s effect (exhausting Nightcrawler). Tharyel plays Faces of Doom from his row and searches out Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius again. He then uses Ivy (2) to KO Puppet Master and his Faces to search out a Latverian Embassy. He flips up the Embassy. He then recruits a Puppet Master from his hand behind Ivy (2) once again. Spooky lays his resource and plays Wolverine, James Howlett. James Howlett is protecting Nightcrawler with Dagger to the right of NC. Ivy attacks Dagger, who activates and sends herself back to Spooky’s hand. Tharyel taps down James Howlett with his unexhausted Puppet Master. With Spooky’s board now exhaust Tharyel sends Dr. Light into Nightcrawler, but is met with a power up to trade stuns. 34-33.

Turn 6
Spooky broke out Rogue Powerhouse and put her to the right of Wolverine (who is protecting Nightcrawler). Tharyel flipped a ring has chosen from his resource row and searched out Boris (discarding Onslaught). Puppet Master tapped down Nightcrawler. Tharyel brought out a second Puppet Master (ko’ing the first) to tap down Wolverine. Ivy KO’d Puppet Master and The Ring Has Chosen to search out Latveria, which is kept face down. Tharyel played Boris (1) and then activated Dr. Light to bring out Puppet Master again from the KO’d pile. He activated Puppet Master to tap down Rogue, and with everyone on the board exhausted, both players pass to turn 7. 34-33.

Turn 7
Tharyel laid his resource and activated Puppet Master. Nightcrawler exhausted. He then played a second Puppet Master, and activated to exhaust Wolverine. Tharyel flipped up Avalon Space Station, activated it discarding Submariner, Ally of Doom, and reclaimed another Puppet Master to hand. Spending another 2 resource points, Puppet Master was then again replayed and activated exhausting Rogue (6). Ivy used her ability to KO Puppet Master and an unflipped Reconstruction Program to search out Slaughter Swamp. Dr. Light activated to bring out Puppet Master one more time. Spooky flipped up Total Anarchy and Flame Trap in his row (discarding Nightcrawler and Dagger). Boris activated and ran away to grab a Gamma Bomb for Tharyel. Ivy, Puppet Master, and Nightcrawler are all KO’d. Spooky played a Straight to the Grave from his hand and searches out Professor X (7), using a now face up Slaughter Swamp to reclaim him from the KO’d Pile. Tharyel exhausted Dr. Doom for Mystical Paralysis on Professor X, who respond with an activation of his own to tap down Doom for the burn. Both players passed the turn at that point. 23-31.

Turn 8
Turn 8 went by pretty face. Spooky Straight to the Grave’d for Apocalypse, and then reclaimed him with a Slaughter Swamp. Tharyel brought out Apocalypse himself and activated to bring back Ivy. Spooky looked at the board and scooped.

Match 2
Turn 1
Spooky chose odds this time and mulliganed his hand. Tharyel did the same. Both players play their resource and have a bit of friendly jabbing from the peanut gallery about the benefits of playing only 1 one drop on turn 4, they moved on to turn 2.

Turn 2
Tharyel laid his resource, flipped Straight to the Grave to search out Puppet Master, and then flipped Slaughter Swamp to use its ability to fish out PM discarding Submariner, Ally of Doom. Spooky has no recruit allowing PM to smash for 0.

Turn 3
Kang Cobra came down for Spooky. Dr. Light was recruited in front of PM for Tharyel. He then discarded the Ring Has Chosen to search out Boris and discarded Boris to the KO’d pile due to the Ring’s effect. Dr. Light brought out Boris to Tharyel’s front row and PM activated to tap down Kang Cobra. Thrayel chose not to attack with Boris, and they were on to turn 4. 50-49.

Turn 4
Tharyel played Dr. Doom behind Dr. Light, flipping down Straight to the Grave. Boris ran away and grabbed a Reign of Terror, allowing Doom to Reign back Kang Cobra. Tharyel used Slaughter Swamp at that point to discard Boris in order to return Submariner from the KO’d Pile to his hand. The “good?” Dr. Light activated to bring the amazing butler that could back onto the field. Boris formed in front of Puppet Master. Dr. Light formed in front of Dr. Doom and Tharyel passes. Spooky laid his resource and flipped up Total Anarchy and Flame Trap. Boris ran away to seek out a Straight to the Grave and PM was KO’d to a newly flipped Devil’s Due to give a counter to Dr. Doom. Luke Cage (4) was recruited by Spooky. Dr. Doom swung in for 8 and Tharyel passed his attack. Luke Cage swung into the exposed Dr. Light who was KO’d to Total Anarchy (and Spooky drew a card to Cage’s effect). Both players passed with the field an 8/7 Dr. Doom against an 8/7 Luke Cage. 43-42.

Turn 5
Spooky laid his resource and played Straight to the Grave, using Slaughter Swamp to recur Sunfire who was newly placed into the KO’d pile. Tharyel played his resource and used Slaughter Swamp to get PM at the cost of a Submariner. PM tapped down Luke Cage and was then KO’d to pump up Doom a bit more. Dr. Light reappeared (he is the master of holograms after all) for Tharyel who activated to bring out PM again. PM activated and was responded to by Spooky using Sunfire to stun Dr. Light. Dr. Light was KO’d to Devil’s Due to boost Doom another +1/+1. Spooky passed his attack and allowed the 10/9 Doom to run over Sunfire. 43-34

Turn 6
Tharyel started turn 6 with his resource and then flipping a previously face-down Avalon Space Station face-up. He played Straight to the Grave from his hand in order to send Battering Ram to his KO’d pile. Tharyel then used the Avalon by discarding an excess Devil’s Due to grab the 5 drop. After the pre-required Chuck Norris joke, Tharyel passed with his Battering Ram in front of Dr. Doom and the Puppet Master off to the side. Wolverine: James Howlett is the recruit for Spooky, who places him in front of Sunfire. On Tharyel’s attack, he activated and KO’d Battering Ram. Sunfire responded with an activation of his own to attempt to stun Puppet Master. Tharyel KO’d Puppet Master to Devil’s Due to give Dr. Doom another counter. Dr. Doom now an 11/10 swung at Wolverine. Spooky used Wolverine’s ability (he discarded Rogue Powerhouse) to prevent the stun and only take the BEL. 43-31.

Turn 7
Spooky started his recruit by Straight to the Graving/Slaughter Swamping Professor Xavier into his hand. Spooky then formed all of his characters into the front row (fully aware of the Submariner that has been bouncing back and forth in Tharyel’s KO’d pile/Hand). Tharyel activated his own Slaughter Swamp to send Press the Attack to his KO’d Pile and Puppet Master to his hand. Tharyel then played Puppet Master and used its effect to tap down Luke Cage. Puppet Master is then KO'd to up Dr. Doom to 12/14 (Tharyel flipped a Doomstadt). Avalon Space Station was then activated as Tharyel discarded a second Doomstadt in order to return PM to hand. PM them tapped down to exhaust James Howlett. Dr. Doom was then boosted again as PM was KO'd to Devil's Due. Tharyel brought out Boris finally, and activated to search for Gamma Bomb. Dr. Doom was left exposed in front of Puppet Master, and as a result during the attack Spooky's attack, Dr. Doom was smacked around with a Savage Beatdown. Sunfire then swung himself into Puppet Master (before it was legal, Tharyel flipped a Latverian Embassy). 25-31.

Turn 8
Tharyel started his turn by using Straight to the Grave for Apocalypse, who was quickly regained to his hand and recruited. Spooky thought for a moment, and activated Professor X on Doom, burning for 13. Then, he copied his previous turn, STTG/Slaughter Swamping for Professor X who then once again burned Doom and Tharyel for another 13, followed promptly by a scoop on the part of Tharyel.

All tied up at 1.

Match 3
Tharyel chose odds and both players kept their hand.

Turn 1
Tharyel laid a resource and passed. Spooky followed by laying and playing Wild Ride to search out a Micro-Chip. During the attack, Micro-Chip brought out the mad beats, and both players moved to turn 2. 49-49.

Turn 2
Spooky laid his resource and flipped up Midnight Sons teaming XMen with Marvel Knights. Tharyel Straight to the Graved/Avalon'd for Poison Ivy. Micro-Chip, a little more fearful of the mad beats this time, passed to Ivy who swung at him. Spooky used Micro-Chip to turn Wild Ride face down, and Ivy readied to swing direct for 3. 49-46.

Turn 3
Tharyel played Dr. Light and passed. Dr. Light was in front of Ivy. Spooky brought down Wolverine and passed. Tharyel had no attacks, but Spooky took advantage by attacking Wolverine into Dr. Light and flipping up a Total Anarchy. Dr. Light is KO'd to the Anarchy and the field is left Poison Ivy (2) on Tharyel's side, to Wolverine (3) on Spooky's. 44-46.

Turn 4
Spooky played his resource and threw down a Wild Ride from his hand to grab Gambit. Dr. Doom came down for Tharyel who flipped Straight to the Grave face down with his effect. Dr. Doom is in front of Ivy. Wolverine comes across at Dr. Doom. Tharyel flipped a Doomstadt to boost up to a 7/9, but a Savage Beatdown brings a stop to that. Doom stuns and trades with Wolverine (who is KO'd to Anarchy). Gambit swings at Ivy who takes the stun and KO's. 33-39.

Turn 5
Tharyel Straight to the Graved for Boris and played Puppet Master. PM activated, but Gambit responded by activating as well, KO'ing PM. Dr. Light is then recruited by Tharyel by activating Avalon Space Station to dig him out of the KO'd pile. Dr. Light actvates to bring PM out to the field. The field is now an exhausted Gambit to Dr. Doom hiding behind a Dr. Light with an unexhaust PM to the right of Dr. Doom. Spooky lays his resource and played Flame Trap from his row. PM is KO'd. Daredevil is then played in front of Gambit. Tharyel passed his attack and Spooky sent Daredevil into Dr. Light. With no answers, Dr. Light KO'd from Anarchy. 21-39.

Turn 6
Spooky played Rogue Powerhouse after digging for her with Slaughter Swamp in his KO'd pile. He formed with everyone in the front row. Tharyel laid his resource and used Avalon to bring Puppet Master out of his KO'd pile to play. He activates, which taps down Daredevil. Dr. Light is then played from hand and he activated to bring Boris out of the KO'd pile. Boris immediately runs away to grab a Mystical Paralysis to tap down Rogue. Tharyel forms with Dr. Doom in front of PM and Dr. Light off to one side. Spooky attacks into Dr. Light with Gambit and with the attack legal, plays a Savage Beatdown from hand. Dr. Light is KO'd and both players pass. 11-39

Turn 7
Tharyel laid his resource and tapped down PM to exhaust Daredevil. Dr. Doom is then played from hand KO'ing the previous Doom, and flipping down Straight to the Grave. Straight to the Grave is turned face up and Boris once again is put into the KO'd pile. Tharyel thinks for a moment and then Reign of Terrors his own Puppet Master so he could replay it. Puppet Master is then replayed and is tapped immediately to exhaust Rogue Power House. He then used Avalon to scrummage Boris out of the KO'd pile and played him (discarding Robot Destroyer). Boris grabbed himself another Mystical Paralysis. BigSpooky used a Wild Ride to fetch out Professor X. Tharyel flipped up Latverian Embassy. Gambit activated to KO Puppet Master, and Professor X is then recruited by Spooky. Dr. Doom used the Mystical Paralysis to attempt to tap down Prof X, who just used his ability to burn out Doom. Spooky at the end activated Slaughter Swamp to return an Apocalypse to his hand. 2-32.

Turn 8
Tharyel thought for a moment, as Spooky activated to burn Doom. With that taking Tharyel to -5, Tharyel scooped it up.

It's what happens when the competitors ask the judge/match writer a question and he immediately takes it literally without taking into account "what they really are asking". ;)

In game 3 you said that Taryel Reign of Terrors his own Dr. Doom. Don't you mean Puppet Master instead, especially since you can't Reign of Terror Doom.
