As an additional cost to play Drain Essence, exhaust an Energy character you control.
KO target stunned character. Gain endurance equal to the cost of the character you exhausted.

a question was asked about this card at an event I played in and did not judge.
The question...if the target character is no longer stunned at resolution of the effect does the player still gain the endurance equal to the cost of the character they exhausted?
The judge said the target was no longer legal so the entire effect was negated. Others present did not agree...I know what I would have said, but was looking for more input from here.
Thats what I told him. I usually judge the events in my area, but I also want to play from time to time so he is judging also, but he has only judged one other event.
The real issue was the match in question was my sons..so I told him I couldn't add my input until after he made his choice, then I told him I agreed. He did a really great job using the comp rules to find the answer.
I thought this would be a resolve as much of the effect as you can sistuation so the life would be gained. Hmmm. Is this the way the Hellions work like Firestar since you can ko her for five but chain a ko like raising hell and still do the 5?
Also for magnetic force, if it is negated do you still exhaust?

The FAQ specifically talks about the 6 MXM cards that say KO me and do something else.
Firestar does not say "if you do" so you may use her own ability and then KO her for another effect and your opponent would still loose the 5 endurance from Firestar's ability. and you would get whatever other bonus you ko'd her for.

If the effect requires targets, and all targets are illegal by the time the effect resolves, the *entire* effect is negated.
This is different from an effect where parts of the effect cannot be performed, in which case simply all the parts that can be performed, are.
I'm gonna try to nip a Hellfire Club wording issue in the bud---let's say that you want to get double the fun from Firestar's KO, getting benefits from both her natural burn and Die For Darkseid!.
She gets stunned, and her effect goes on the chain. When this resovles, you get to make a yes/no choice about whether to do nothing, or to simultaneously KO and burn. Before that happens, you play Die For Darkseid!, KOing her to pay the cost. When it resolves, the burn willl occur, and when Firestar's own effect resolves, you can still choose the KO/burn option. The fact that she's gone doesn't stop you from choosing that option for the burn.
What you aren't doing is deciding to KO her for her own effect, and then afterwards mysteriously double KOing her to both effects at once. You are KOing her to something else, and then choosing to try and KO/burn when her own effect resolves.
As for the issue of negating effects vs. resolving as much as possible, I'm going to point towards a post from last week that goes in-depth.
