To anyone who has made VS a success in a group of Magic players, can you give me a hand...
There is a store (here in NH... "Cardhunters") that is pretty much all Magic. I talked to the owners of the store, and they are willing to work with me if I want to have a demo day and leagues and tournaments. The only problem? players.
So does anybody have great hints and tips to demo this game to show how great it is? and Im looking for something more than letting them win.
Free stuff always works. Like give them a free starter or something. I dunno what UDE gives Demo members though. I know Wizards gave my store like 10 starter decks to give out for free at the start of Duel Masters.
In Phoenix we have about 2 real gaming stores, one is exclusively magic and the other is primarily Vs.
When I play Vs in the Magic store people are interested. Unfortunately, the two stores are quite far away from each other(30 miles or so) and people don't like the cost of entering another game.
Our Vs Store has had success by making prebuilt decks for relatively cheap (Squadron for $30-40 for example). This lets people wanting to buyin for cheap play at a competitive level early. Avengers (minus Mansion) and Good Guys (minus Kooey) are also relatively inexpensive decks that are reasonable.
Most MTG players are in it for the Pro Tour, so show them the prize structure for Pro Circuit/10k/PCQ and tell them how many people go to Pro Circuit/10k/PCQ. That usualy gets a lot of attention. When I talk to MTG players about Vs I usually never describe a single thing about the actual game mechanics.
Boy... good luck. I've tried already and the guys are so loyal to DCI that they consider it a mortal sin to even think of another game that's not made by Wizards.
I was able to convert a lot of Yu-Gi-Oh! players but that was it.
To Ihate pants, i just moved to tempe and would love to know which store this is since I'm all ways looking for great players and stores that are dedicated to the game

Wait, so your back in Arizona now? When did this happen??
On topic, the best way is to give away stuff. If you know Magic, use Magic terms to explain things.
Well, just start mentioning how VS doesn't have mana screw/mana flood etc. Most people get really frustrated when they lose b/c of that. Should get the noobs who think they are good to start playing vs at least.

Any card can be mana.
All creatures have trample.
Thats how i learned when i got started. And like bubble said, tell them about prizes, that would help alot.
All "creatures" have provoke, as well...
Using MTG terms is the best way to indtroduce MTG players to VS... Then show them that VS is cheaper and that power decks can be constructed with less than a 100 dollars... That will have them interested in the game right away...
Characters also don't go back into your hand after attacking on the first turn they come into play (Which is, I believe what Trample is).
If you look at Vs & Magic, they're the same game, except Vs has better mechanics (Both players per turn, every character has trample, anything can be used as a Resource (Mana)). The Pro Circuit is basically the same (In terms of cash); Magic has worlds, Vs has 10k's (Well, 13.5k's).
But in the end, FREE STUFF will always get people into the game, even if only for a short while.
All creatures don't have provoke, then you would untap the blockers. Also, how would you explain flight being helpful, they would just attack support row characters at will. People, it's not mana screw/flood, its Land screw/flood, you tap land to produce mana. Don't try to use magic terms too loosely, it might confuse them. There are a lot of things that are different, like Equipment (I see a lot of newer players placing multiple equipment on one character). Try to only use the terms that actually translate into MTG terminoligy. Tap and Exhaust is the best way to describe it, not like Upkeep and Resource Step as examples. Just like any new game you need to teach them the correct way to play with its own keywords. Using too many terms from MTG will confuse a lot of players, as in "well in MTG you would be able to do this and that."

Oh man, that was pretty fun, but they didn't have enough for everyone. Make sure that when you have the demo, that you know how many people will show up and want free stuff!
Example: Me and Tombster went to a demo of Duel Masters at our local comic store (which unfortunately closed down), and there weren't enough supplies for everyone, so make sure of that.
Also, explain to them how there is a similarity to Magic and how they are both fun and similar games.
For example, similarities:
-Endurance
-Flight and Range
-Resources=Manna
and alot more, but there are better characters, because they are actual characters and actually "exist"
