Since the tournament structure for Vs. here in europe has changed dramatically and all prize money was eliminated I would like to know if the american players still would play Vs. if there was no prize money. Perhaps someone who is able to do that can create a poll?
Personally I stand buckleys chance of ever winning any prize money, yet I still want to attend the big tourneys, if only to get some good competition and meet new players.
And yet, I can't help thinking how cool it would be to walk out with cash.
... and yet, I can't help thinking how cool it would be to walk out with _anything_.
For those not current with the upcoming changes to the European competition structure, the changes governing prizes means that you will now have product & promos instead of cash and those qualifying for PCs (through winning events) will receive plane tickets & hotels paid.
This make a huge amount of sense for UDE: they are giving you an all expenses trip to a PC that will really push you to go. It's harder for a European player to say no to a seat on a plane and a hotel room than to a sum of money vastly inferior to the cost of those two perks. A lot of people would think long and hard about having to invest yet more money to reach an event after winning a PCQ.
At the end of the day a PCQ is to get a player to the PC, so why not just get them there as their prize?
Secondly, the change allows UDE to splurge out on promos (EAs, mats, product etc.) across the entire player base of the qualifier/local/national event. Given that UDE has been a little dodgy on the promo end of things, I'm going to wait to see this one come into play. Maybe I'm being unnecessarily sceptical but.....
I would keep playing, just like I kept playing magic without ever trying to doing anything more than Friday Night Magic. The game is meant to be played for fun. If someone happens to win money on the side then awesome for them, but if that is the sole reason they play I think they are missing the point.
People played this game before there was ever a Pro Circut and I'm sure they would if it was removed, but i know that the thought of a significant reward such as money drives people to play more and spend more on the game than if it didn't have such things. You can always tell a CCG that will be around for a few more years by checking if it has a "Pro tour." I personally have never played the game for any kind of money, and probably won't for awhile.
Zimagic, you've got things slightly wrong. There are now 3 tournaments in UDE-Europe's tournie structure:
Day of the hero : normal sanctioned tournament, has to be sanctioned 28 days in advance), can be any format, prize support of .5 boosters per player + 2 ea's (currently8 drop jean greay from mor)
Trial of the finest : quasi-pcq, winner gets 5 pc points and choice of decktin or play mat, 2nd gets 2 pc points and the other prize, and 3-4 get 1 pc point, no other prizes.
Masters challenge - quasi 10k, you have to PAY 5 pc points to enter, the top 2 players get 10 PC points and travel/accom to next pc, but there hasn't been any confirmation that there is anything else for anyone else, not even any pc points payouts. These have been rumoured to be 2-4 a year for the WHOLE of europe
so people are less likely to get to the pc overall, and top it off the hobby league (which was keeping a lot of people interested) has been stopped throughout europe (this is not a rumour, has been confirmed with actual correspondence between ude and an UK TO).
I played before there was prize money. I play all the time at home, with a few people. I play at the Hobby League, for a card. (Okay, this weekend I walked away with 2 shirts and a playmat- which leads me to rant over the person who ran the thing. The people I beat walked away with the same and half a box of cards) I would play more, if there was no prize money, because it would mean more people were making their own decks, and not trying as hard to netdeck just to win. Takes the fun out of it. (Watching a 10 year old beg his parents for $60 so he can buy a couple of cards, to make a netdeck, before they wont let him proxy his cards, drives me up the wall.)

uhhhh....actually the Pro Circuit was one of original selling points for VS. So yeah money has always been available for the qualifiers and 10Ks and what not.
this game is awesome, the money part just makes it a whole lot better, but its like ygo players, they don't get money, they get boosters and they still keep playing.
