Ok, the last time I started a "The Sky is Falling" thread it was a total joke, but this time I'm actually serious. To start, let me say that I have complete faith in the health and stability of VS as a game, and that I only see bright things for the future. I don't think that the game is in jeopardy, so please don't respond to this thread with cries of "d00d st0p beng a n00b n complanin i <3 vs stfu h8r."
However, the recent influx of new games on the TCG market has me concerned. I don't know all the details, but WoW is offering a 100K cash prize for first place at their World's event, and The Spoils seems like it has some insane prize support with 400K total being given away at their World's. All of these numbers by comparison make 40K for 1st at the PC seem insignificant, although if you were to add up total prize support for every event for each game they would probably be about even. Still, do you think that VS is going to be pushed aside by many players in favor of the seemingly greater prize payouts for these new games (as well as the fact that they're _new_ games, because everyone loves to play something fresh every now and then) or that all the commotion is just typical "grand opening" hype and that it will all die down by early 2007?
The only bright side to this that I can see would be that we'll lose a few "pros" from the Vs. Circuit who are only interesed in the $$$ as opposed to the longevity of the game.
Give these new games an expansion or two and see how they hold up. I heard the same talk regarding MTG every time a new game popped up on the scene and that game is still going strong. We'd lose a few local players to the "new game", but they always came back... generally because the "new game" never grew past infancy. We played the game for a year before there was ever a "World Championship" event. It took almost three years before we had an actual "Pro Tour".
UDE seems to like to make these "grand opening"-type of splashes, so this seems like business as usual for them. I can remember the collective gasp we all gave when the $1 Million Pro Circuit was announced before we had even seen a full card spoiler for Vs. Seems like more of the same.
Besides, aren't WoW players attached to their keyboards? Could they actually seperate themselves from their PC's long enough to attend one?
I worry about the same thing. It would be really sad to see this happen, because from what I have seen/heard, VS is much better than WoW and the Spoils.
I was personally pre-buying the game anyway as my casual game. I'm very sad they are conflicting the WOW Worlds with the VS PC in SoCal; that makes things a little hard (I'd love to attend both). I was going to use WOW as a much more casual game to have fun with my friends; that seems like its gonna be a little harder if their prizes are on the level (actually, bigger) than VS.
i think UDE has timed the release of Marvel Teamup and World's Finest just right.... because it seems like they're making an effort to expand their core player base by making sets with the iconic, easy-to-recognize (and thus easier to be drawn into), while allowing exisiting players play all their favorite guys in all the formats (hopefully, they'll be playable.... ;-)
anywho, I don't think the new TCGs are of a big concern. as it is widely known it is INCREDIBLY hard to have a new TCG to catch on and become popular, and VS is one of the few. most popular TCGs have been around for a long time (yugi, PoKe, MTG, etc). So unless one of these new games gets lucky, I don't think we will be seing anything new.
Prize money or not, VS System, the core rules the Marvel and DC TCG's are built on, is simpley surperior. As long as the other games don't More than double the winnings at every level and give them out as often, VS will be okay.
Well here are he rules that'll get me into playing a card game (In no real order)
1:Cheap. the cheaper the packs the better. If you can make boxes less then 40, you got me intrested.
2: Game must be fun. I dont like playing a game and have it be like a job. VS is a serious game, but even on the serious level, everyone has fun.
3: Easy to play/learn. the reason I got out of magic was because I stank at it. No mater how much i learned, things didn't click. VS has been much more sucessful for me.
4: Cash Prizes. Cars and trophies are nice. But I like green a whole lot better.
5: Probably most important, Player support/Lots of tournaments. Having a large tournament is nice, but not once a year in some far off location. If I seriously spend cash on a game, I want to be able to play it, and often as I like. VS suffers a bit from this problem, although, its getting better, now with a lot more PCQ's out. Still, Hobby League is just like pokemon league, and usually played by people of the same intellegence (although not the same age  )
Vs should be allright, I am gonna start playing spoils after seeing the prize support, it was between spoils and wow as a 2nd game and spoils looks to have more money.
These games have one big blowout event. Then they have nothing while Vs. continues with it's 1,000,000 dollar pro circuit series. Unless those games have alot more big cash prize events I think Vs. Will still win out. But Dave is right, it is stupid of UDE to hold WoW and Vs. at the same time. They should do something about it in the future.
I wonder... might the fact that VS is no longer the big new money-making CCG actually make more people jump into VS for the fact that it's fun? I know that quite a few people in my area jumped into and out of the game because of the competitive nature the concept of being a big prize-giver caused. It's an interesting point to consider, I think...
I was ignoring this thread for a while because I thought it was the old "The sky is falling" one.
It looked strange with only 12 replies as I had remembered it with more.
Having caught on here's my 2 pence.
Your figures are a bit misleading.
WoW $100k
Spoils $400k
VS $250k (for the moment until we goto 3 PCs a year when it'll go up to $300something k)
Have you got the link for the WoW news?
I find the news of them offering money very surprising.
Dividing the playersbase is surely not what UDE wanted to do...
I'm sure there's a lot of TCGers who were already thinking of picking it up as a 2nd or even 3rd game.
I think there's been too much emphasis placed on new players rather than the old faithful which is why the money annoucement has come out.
Is Spoils actually any good? I've been avoiding all contact with it until now.
My friend gave me the WoW link, and I'll ask him for it whenever I talk to him again. Like I said though, I didn't read through all the details of the prize support for each game, so my figures are probably inaccurate. In the meantime though, it shouldn't be too hard to google up the prize support announcements.
