3 Goats and a Troll Meet at a River... (trolling debate)
Here's an ... interesting question.
Thread-Starters have the right/ability to lock their own thread ... should they also have the right/ability to lock specific posters out of their thread as well?
Continual-Trolling/Mild-Non-Specific-Harassment isn't a bannable offense (and I'm not saying that it should), but that doesn't mean it's not a problem.
Would this be feasible?
Would this be ethical?
If they could still post their ideas and opinions on the forums of this site, but be able to be "mini-banned" from a specific thread for continual trolling, would this violate their right to speak their mind, or is it just allowing for the privatizing of a thread to some degree to those the thread creator wishes to discuss whatever topic with?
Would this help matters, or would it cause more problems than it starts?
Just to be clear, I'm not proposing this idea, it's just something that I wanted to bring up for discussion due to a problem with the /ignore list. (That problem being, we all quote each other so much, that /ignore is pretty much completely ineffective.)
I don't know. It sounds like a good idea at first, but I think it would quickly become very out of control and lead to a lot of stupidity and spam-threads with people replying anyway, just in a whole other waste of space.
At least when somebody is a dick about a thread now you just hit page down instead of it taking up space on the front page with their 4 running, "I'm A Jack ###" threads in the 10 most recent.
Part of my point is that /ignore is largely ineffectual, as shown by puritan's post. Because he was quoted, his post got through ignore just perfectly inside someone else's post - and trolls seem to always be quoted as people rebutt them.
However, I agree with Ranma that even though it seems an appealing idea ... there are potential problems with it, which is why I put it up for discussion rather than just advocating it.
You know what would be cool as hell? If the mods put him on Ignore for all members but himself. Then he could keep trying to incite bad feelings under his account, but no one would have to endure the sight of it.
Bad idea. If this was allowed, people could potentially "rig" any threads that involve debating by blocking people who have a certain point of view and this would not be very beneficial to the community. Also, users, like myself, would probably abuse this ability by blocking random people for no apparent reason just becasue we can.
