Last sneak I asked about the rarity of Royal Guards. It sparked some discussion about how rarity is chosen in these threads. And even got a highlight in a metagame article http://www.metagame.com/vs.aspx?tabid=46&ArticleId=7058
Yeah I'm that guy with the eight word post.
Well I have another one looking at the Legion Set...
Otherworldly Battle, Magic
Play Otherworldly Battle only if you control a Shadowpact character.
As an additional cost to play Otherworldly Battle, pay 3 endurance.
KO target character with cost 1 or less.
This card is a rare legacy. All in all, we have seen some good ones in the past. We, the Vs Community, have even had the opportunity to make a rare legacy card for this set (Nyssa Raatko).
But in the case of Otherworldly Battle. I can only see it being a response to a swarm based meta, one that is several seasons too old.
This rare, will not see sealed play at all, due to the limited Shadowpact characters. So limiting its impact on sealed play is a non-issue.
So the only reason I can see for this cards existance is one of two things....1) filler. Shadowpact already has some weenie hate in the Spectral Slaughter, this is just adding to that characteristic of the team. 2) Interactions with the next DC set where DLS will bottom out the modern age.
Is there any other reason for this to be a rare in this set?
Bad as that rare may be, it's not nearly as horrible as the new 6-cost Acro-Dodge or the new, rare Circle Defense. I can't even bring myself to type out their card names I'm so disgusted.
I hate crap rares! When you're only a young teen like myself it's hard enough to come up with money to get packs. Then when you do and find a crap rare it really defeats your spirits, because you have to scrounge up more money in hopes of getting stuff you need. Please upper deck! We need this easier for kids!
The very reason Otherworldly Battle is rare is that it's a card which is not generally at all considerable for sealed or probably even draft decks. The effect of trading 3 END to remove a 1-drop or Haywaire from the field is pretty good, considering how many 1-drops nowadays can either cost you that much END or more in the long run directly, or have effects that can mess with you. It's metagame specific, but if you think of how much play Mikado and Mosha sees in GA play, even being more narrow in some ways, this can still be quite playable in a curve SP deck that needs a way to stem the flow of characters in Faces, AGL, or other swarm decks.

Well, as far as cards that won't see play in sealed or draft ... I'd have to go with Solar Powered. I mean, Superman has had dealings with the Legion, no? How hard would it have been to work in a version of Superman?
Not that I'm complaining, I love alot of the stuff they've done with this set - INCLUDING the Name-Stamping, I'm just saying ... at least Otherworldly Battle is Hypothetically useable in sealed. This set needed a character named Superman.

You are crazy because both of these cards are awesome in sealed.
I agree, it shouldn't be rare, but it sure isn't junky. KO has always been better than stun, and considering this isn't restricted to the combat phase I'd say it's pretty good.
I saw this go off in sealed, a guy pulled this and in two of his packs the new mary marvel. It's a good card in constructed and while it maybe horrible in sealed it has it's purpose for being rare. Being able to flat out knock creatures off the board is powerful, titans can do it in roy harper <> speedy, this card does it at the mere cost of 3 endurance, which shadowpact likes to do. Don't cry and moan about junk rares, they're always around and every set has them, with possibly one of the more famous being just plain and simple for it's jankieness reign of terra. I do love that card however, don't know why.
It must be noted that this was the first DC set without a Superman.
edit: can't the card be used with that superboy<>superman or no? I'd think not, but it would beg the question why now as opposed to DWF
X-men was the first marvel set to not feature spider-man, my guess is they're changing it up to dif characters or something. Wolveriene looks to be it for marvel, and DC has alex luthor or bart allen. Just a theory cause they may have put an end to it but eh, one never knows.
