Just curious, anyone have a really big local VS scene? Hobby League with a lot of players, weekly tournies with a good turnout, a local scene big enough that the casual play incorporates the current age (and isn't just always Golden Age), or weekly 8 man drafts?
I wouldn't call it the "best", but Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky's is pretty good. There's a place that plays regularly every Wednesday (drafts and newest age), a Hobby League on Saturday and I believe Thursday, and a casual play day on Tuesday, all at different stores. I don't go to all of them but this is what I know of.

Man, that sounds pretty good. To my knowledge, all I have is Hobby League once a week. It would be great if there was a place in Austin that drafted once a week. I haven't been to my local Hobby League in the past couple of months because the day conflicts with other things I want to do each Thursday evening: Happy Hour.
We have two local places in Niles, IL that does Hobby League (Wed at Pastimes and Sat at Orbitron).
We probably have a group of about fifteen who might show up on either of those days to play. We usually have in the forties for PCQs at Pastimes. I think we've been fair as we can be with supplementing some prizes when UDE slipped up on the hobby stuff.
I would also argue that we have the best judges of anywhere...:noid:
We typically get 5-6 on the weekly Vs night, with nine or so people who play but occasionally can't make it in. We've got three or four that have started in the last year, and there are some people who showed up at the pre that might start playing here regularly.

Great idea for a topic!
People complain about the "haters/apologists" all the time. Why not try to find out who has a great scene and what it consists of?
Unfortunately, I have had the bad luck of finding two large college towns without a Vs presence, save a handful of people. :(
In Pasadena, I'd say we have about 15 people that could show up on any given hobby league night. Normally I'd say maybe 8-10 people show. We can generally do 8 person drafts whenever we feel like it, which is certainly nice. No one takes the game too seriously (though there have been a few incidents, which are just funny now :) ), and we all just go to have fun and jank it up.
Not to hijack Hatter, but I am really interested in where people play (the FLGS) as well as the approximate number of players for different events (i.e. Hobby League play, drafts, Sneaks, PCQs). Not that you would have to have quantitative info on all these just educated guesses.
(Trying to figure out where to move to next and all ;))
I live in Philadelphia, and although there are one or two small hobby leagues in the area, I usually don't go. Why? Because it's less than a two hour drive to NYC, Delaware, western PA, or almost anywhere in NJ. Because of that, I can attend two PCQs a month, on a bad month. In December and January, there are a total of almost a dozen PCQs within a two hour driving radius.
I don't have a great turn out but we are growing in part of my trying to help the game grow .

When I'm at college, in the southeastern part of Ohio (about two hours ish from Acme Games in Cincinnati), we have 6-8 people usually, playing Golden Age. I'll be making it a hobby league shortly after I return in January. We typically play on Wednesdays at the LCS (local comic shop), as it being New Comics Day also makes it easy to advertise Vs.
