Some really good news , the store I go to had went from a playgroup of 25 to 0 , the store owner recently stopped supporting the game to the point where the old Vs. Singles binder has a " Make Me Any Offer " sticker on the front.
Well , tonight I had mentioned to one person about the different ideas UDE had thrown at us , too make a long story short , next Friday we officially start a Vs. hobby league revival. What's impressive is that this IS NOT a group of my friends these are practically 5 strangers that got excited when we started talking about Vs. casual play.
The revival is in stone we all traded phone numbers and we will be bringing all are cards in next Friday. They were really excited when I showed them the post from UDE that was more casual play based. As a group we liked the "Theme" idea "Storyline" idea the most. People were also excited about the "Team Vs." alot.
The reason I posted this is not to pat myself on the back , it's so everyone that is playing in an area that has a LCS that has a recently dead Vs. scene , please give it a shot it was easy. Also if I HAVE TO PAY MY STORE OWNER FOR HOBBY KITS DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THEY COST?
The owner of my store told me they run between 20-25, as was posted above. Also, bear in mind that price is Canadian.
Your store owner can't outright sell you the kits, but you can arange some kind of alternative arrangement (league fee in the form of a lump sum from you) provided you have a league.
If your store is concerned with making the little it costs back, they could always cherry-pick the t-shirts for resale. While I don't advise this, one place I used to play at regularly did this and profitted handsomely.
Hobby League kits are about 20$ each kit, and I think the most you can order for each kit is 2. The problem is you have to be able to get your kit. From what I've heard from around here people still haven't gotten their HOG hobby league kits.
That's great to hear Anerythristic! I myself am in the middle of trying to get a revival of Hobby League at the store that I work in.
UDE has been a lot behind on the Hobby League kits for a few months, making it nearly impossible for us to offer Hobby League for players at my shop. We have so many other stores in our region that without the HL kits players just don't want to travel so far.
That is great news. We are actually going to start a "casual" Vs. revival at my store. A bunch of us are going to bring whatever fun decks we have and play for the fun of it, because that's what games are about :) We are excited about the prospect of different types of formats as well
Donais said there was going to be a huge revamp of the Hobby League in aught-seven. This has been talked about in several threads, it might be a good idea to glean some of that info and share it with your new Hobby League mates.
$20-25? Cool. I'm trying to convince my LGS to start up a hobby league. I need to ask them how many people come in for the cards... I mean, what happens if the store orders a kit, then doesn't get enough people for the league? Do they just keep the EAs? Give them to the people that DO show up?
Also, I know judges can't play in the tournaments they judge, but does that hold true for HLs? If so, does the kit provide anything for the judge?

Here's from my experience:
If a Hobby League has more cards than players, it is up to the TO to decide what to do with them (the cards are already paid for). I was a TO and Judge for HL, so I would often hook up the players that showed up (good attendence prizes) if there was extra. I also would hold votes for "most original deck" to help promote a fun environment...
You are correct, judges CANNOT play in tournaments that they judge (Hobby League or otherwise). It is because of this that I and another judge both worked the same Hobby League for a while. We would alternate weeks so that each of us got to play and judge a little each month. The judge DOES NOT get anything in the Hobby League kit (which I am not a fan of...), BUT, UDE did send me a grip of Deck Tins and an alternate art EA Acro-Dodge (The prizes appear to be doled out annually, and seem to get better/more plentiful the more you judge).
I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I do think that judges get the shaft on the deal.
When I was judging Heroclix, I was given a limited edition game piece for every single tournament that I ran. Some pieces were better than others, but the thing is, if I judged 1 tournament a week during the entire run of a set, I got ALL of the LE gamepieces.
This is the equivalent of saying: Judge 1 tournament a week from the sneek peek of Legion of Superheroes to the sneek peek of MTU, and you get every EA from the set.
The difference: Heroclix are hand-painted miniature figures, and VS Cards are, well, CARDS.
If a smaller company like Wizkids can hook their Level 1 judges up like that, why can't UDE?
EDIT: Oh, yeah, and the Heroclix prize kits don't cost the venue anything to give out. For every tournament run, there are at least 2 LE Figures to give out...1 for the tournament champ, and 1 for "Fellowship" (basically a good sportsmanship award). Wizkids GIVES THEM OUT to support their game.
