Hello all,
I'm relatively new to this game and would like some advice from the players here. A friend of mine who is also new to VS is interested in pooling some money and getting some Infinity Crisis. Should we wait for the new sets instead?

If you're going to buy a box of cards, Infinite Crisis is probably one of the best bets going - there's a good number of reasonable money cards (Removed From Continuity, Blinding Rage, Science Spire, Fatality, The Conclave, Absolute Dominance, etc.), all of the teams (even JSA to an extent) are solidly competitive, and it'll be legal in Silver for another year and a half or so.
I'd say it's a very solid choice. Heralds of Galactus and Legion of Super-Heroes are both excellent sets as well, of course.
Personally, I would recommend Heralds of Galactus over Infinite Crisis. Kree and Skrulls/Inhumans are both more competitive in Silver Age than anything you would get out of Crisis, and they will be usable in Modern Age when that format comes around.
I would not recommend Legion. So far, the only good constructed deck that's been made from that set is Future Foes Discard (which admittedly is REALLY good).
