Sorry... I hope this doesn't violate Fatal's sticky but this was one of the things that caught Jeff's attention.
When there was great prizing... and added amateur prizing... not many people played.
So how can we assume that people will play in PCQs when there is lowered prizing?
People might say what is the use of a no-money PCQ since that would be just like a City Championship.
The difference is, it would be run by PTOs so you don't need a Hobby League store in your area. And it would be a consistent event across the land since all the PTOs would have to adhere to UDE policy.
So would you really play in PCQs with lower prizing?
i would. my rating is ###. it took me 7 PCQs to get Qed for PC SanFran, and i never placed lower than 10th in any of them, and most of them had more than 10 people in the tourny (i think 2 or 3 didnt) and several had 30+.
i like the PC Points system, if it is rating only, i am screwed.
From what I read, it's just going to be the City Championships. If that's what you mean, yes I would. It's a better chance of getting qualified for good, not wasting $20 if you don't make it far, and it would be closer to you, since all hobbie shops that have a hobbie leauge would want to do a City Championship.
I would like to second that. I went to PCQ's for the PC points and the swag - the money prize was something I didn't even think about! And even though I am still an "amateur" (8 or less lifetime PC points) I still aspire to play in the pro circuit. Without PC points, I have no chance to get into the PC (my rating is in the toilet as well).
The answer to your question is yes, however I would like to see the point system re-instated so I have at least a slight chance to get to the pro circuit.
Is this a situation in which a lot of people assumed things were better than they really are?
I mean I am seeing all kinds of people saying "I would play for just points and free stuff." So why aren't those people playing already? Are those folks thinking "well it's no big deal if I skip the PCQ"?
Before you know it the lax attitude has killed attendance, the local scene is languishing and they're cutting OP programs at the top.
Yes, I would travel and play in a non-paying PCQ. The reason players SHOULD be playing in these events is to get Q'd for the PC Circuit. What has turned a lot of potential PCQ'ers off to the tourneys (at least in my area) is the fact that a lot of already Q'd "pros" were treating the event like a $250 cash tourney...as well as scooping out to their friends so they can "earn" their Q points.
A restructured system that disallows already Q'd players from playing would help the "casual to semi-wannabe-pro" to do what the system originally intended... have a chance to earn their way into the PC... assuming the PC continues.

I don't think its fair for you to say that because I don't know how you could possibly know that I go to every PCQ I can in New York.
I think the issue was that there were too many PCQs. If there were less of them, the PCQs would have higher attendance from people trying to get qualified. Sure, maybe you'd have less people qualifying also, but hey, with less PCs, that kinda works out perfectly.
I fully support UDE and their decisions, but I do like PCQs. If they could reinstate them, but less of them, I think it would work out. Less cost to UDE, and more participation per event.
Yes, I would play in a non-money PCQ. I've never won money at one before, so why would I care? :)

As a matter of fact, I attend as many events as I can. Sometimes it is not doable, but for the most part I tend to think I do my share to support this game.
I'm sure that if someone is posting in this thread that means that they are someone who has supported the game and is/has/will go to events to continue to support VS.
Who doesn't want or need money? I will travel 150 miles for the chance of winning cash, cards and competition. I'm not sure I'll drive that far for no cash. BUT I will still go if they were closer or gave out more cards and other prizes. So I guess yea, I would play in a pcq without cash.
I'll take it a step further and say they could also take away the schwag (EA cards, packs as prize support) and I'd still show up to play in the hopes of Q'ing.
d: In an area like Cen. FL, where Unity essentially has a monopoly on VS TO'ing, we have to deal with the fact that they have been splitting up the total # of regional PCQ's between FL and GA. Sadly, the issue of "too many PCQ's" is not true in all areas of the country!
To be honest it was never the money that drove me to go to PCQs. It was the points and the competition. It took me a year plus of playing this game to finally cash in at a PCQ and while it was very satisfiying it was because I won the PCQ and I woulda been equally elated with alot of product and the win.
