I'm looking for as many new and creative ways to play Vs. as possible. Most weeks at our local hobby league store our format is as simple and basic as you can get, Constructed Golden Age. Which is great, you gotta love the classics. But the last hobby league of each month we switch it up and play a different format. I highly recomend suggesting this to your local scene if you don't already do something similar because it makes everyone better players. It forces you to learn how to play against new decks and strategies, and also forces you to construct new decks and maybe find a combo or play style you would never have considered before. Not only does it add variety to the game, but also makes most people better players and deck builders. Each month we vote on a new format for the last week, and we're always looking for new ways to challenge ourselves. So if you have any great ideas please add to the list.
Here is a list of the many formats I have compiled so far:
-Mono-Team (decks can have only one team)
-Mono-Universe (All decks must use only marvel or dc)
-Sealed
-Draft
-No Rares
-Highlander (only one copy of any card)
-Modern Age
-Silver age
-Rush Week (characters can't cost more than five)
-Giant-Sized Vs. (ok we don't do this yet, but I'm sure we will when it comes out)
-Mono-Set constructed (cards from only one set)
-multi-player(2-on-2 or three player showdown)...I'm not sure how this would work yet, but I'm sure it could especially with either 8 or 9 people which is about what we get each week
So let me hear your ideas on new formats, because you can't be creative without limitations.
You know what would be crazy to do. One night when everyone shows up for a tourney, pair everyone up like normal and tell them to put the deck there playing in front of them, then have them switch there decks with there opponents and try to beat each other with your opponents deck. Could be fun.
that would make for some interesting play moments. cause you'd know your opponets deck REALLY well (cause you built it)....but you might have no idea how the deck you were playing worked.
the only problem is you couldn't announce it before hand, because people would try and build bad decks on purpose. But if you did it as a surprise, some people might not like that and could get pissed off.
Well You don't say when your going to do it. Make it a surprise so no one brings crap decks on purpose. I don't see people getting that upset about it. First off, it's not a big tournament for money so just have fun with it. You get to see how your opponents make decks and finds combos that you may have never seen (John). It can help make you a better playing by playing with what you got, Kinda like (sealed). We are playing for fun not for blood so have fun with it. Just my 2 cents.
Yeah,if everyone agreed that they wanted to do it that month, then instead of doing it the last week, I'd randomly decied when to do it that month and announce it after everyone is seated for their first round. That could work.
It's just an Idea. You could also do something like this. Anounce to everyone you would be doing this by the way. Take everyone's name and put them on peices of paper or whatever, mix them up in a hat and have the players pick a name out and who's ever name they get, that's who's deck they play with. Now to encourge people to bring good decks you can reward the player who wins the tourney and the person who built the deck, Maybe?
