I look for something that is close to home, has a friendly atmosphere, nice people. I do feel a strong loyalty to the Cult over any other store hobby I've participated in, and have actually recently changed my pull list to my hobby league store. The reason I gave the other store, which is closer to my home is that they choose not to support a VS hobby league.
In my experiences, I've gone to 3 separate VS hobby leagues. One for House of Heroes in Torrance only lasted a couple of months, then the holidays hit and they never recovered. They were not that structured but at least everyone who showed up for it was made to feel included and they gave prizes. I'm going to harass them again they are still on the list. Shuffle and Cut in La Mirada was more like a team and guests only draft, with two teams on separate sides of the store playing VS. It was bizarre and not really a hobby league from my understanding! Also not very inviting for new players. But I don't think many of the people who played Vs still play there!
Then of course there is the Comic Cult in Torrance where we draft almost every Friday. Has been very consistent the first hobby in this immediate area and the only one left. Has a great atmosphere and friendly people. Very inviting to new players, the worst they have to endure is being called the new guy, by Chris (im_all_newbish). And great prize support! And the best part is we allmost allways get an 8 man draft these days!
I think that atmosphere, store loyalty, and location are the absolute most important, but, if I had a choice as to where I was playing, I'd go where the decks were the most fun.
Example: I don't care if a Hobby League are all ridiculously cool. If they're all playing stuff like QuickFate, or top Tier 1 decks, I probably won't consistently show up. I'll talk Vs. with them. I'll hang with them outside the Vs. environment. But, I probably won't play in their hobby leauge. I have nothing against people playing them and being competitive. It's just, I'd rather have a good time at a hobby league, and if I'm always playing against decks that I have literally no chance against, then what's the point? At a tournament, yeah, that's cool, play what you want. But, hobby leauge? I expect a certain level of jank to be represented.
