Just got an email from the FLGS announcing that due to lack of interest there will not be a Random Punks tourney in Madison, WI.
I was stunned when we only had 9 people at City Champs but now this?! :disappoin
I gave away a whole box of Batman VS Joker 2 player games and a short box full of "marquee" named singles on Free Comic Book Day. I hope that will drum up some interest.
I don't understand a game store not willing to hold a tourney if there are at least 4-8 people interested in it.
But at the same time, every store has to decide which products to put time, money and effort into out of the many that are out there.
I think the only way you can have it done is to offer to help the store pay for the kit (since there would be less expense for them) and to run it yourself. You can make it unsanctioned so that you can play too as long as the other players are okay with it.
Yeah, if the issue we're talking about here is store unwillingness, I have to agree with Erick. 9 people is plenty. If you pay the costs and do the work for them, how could they turn that down?
I emailed the store and said just that. He claims that since the event is tied to Hobby League and they have no interest in HL that they will not host the event.
They will continue to host "premiere" events such as City Champs and Release Celebrations as long as interest remains at 8 or more people.
That is the so Stupid all the Premiere events tie into the hobby league the owner is a real piece of work
how much did you guys pay for your CC and was there any additional swag?

...City Champs, Release Celebrations, and Random Punks are all Hobby League Marquee Events. To get them, Hobby League kits have to be ordered... are they just picking and choosing which to order?
Well... it's their right to choose which HL events they want to run. I just don't think they understand that Random Punks is a pretty good event to hold in its own right since it does come with a playmat for a top prize.
This is a problem with some stores as they only want to support events that they know will bring in players. In this case, I don't think they realize that Random Punks does have the pull for players to show up.

I am still a bit confused by his rationale. I thought the events were all the same "tier" but he seems to think there is a distinction.
The Hobby League at this store is held on Weds nights and not well attended. I guess he thinks that since this event is "tied to Hobby League" that there is no reason to hold it.
Our City Champs was 10 dollars and there was no "additional swag" provided.
Personally I feel like this store has an attitude that if it's not Magic it's not worth their time/space. They really pack 'em in for MTG events.

On one note, I will point out Misty Mountain is primarily for Magic players. They pack in Yugi player to but, nobody really cares...okay well they do. Their Yugi tournaments started out really amazingly in terms of running the event goes but in recent times, HORRIBLE HORRIBLE disasters. 'Nuff said.
The other is that most of the people you guys used to get up there for PCQs were from Chicago. Lets be honest, there's seemingly not much Vs. Love in Madison, WI. I was gonna go up there but the prizes were poor and there was really no incentive for me. If it was a PCQ or Elite Series, there easily, for something as small as a CC, uh...no. If they gave out additional prizes, yeah, maybe. $10 for nothing extra is like highway robbery though. Ours' was done for $5 with nothing extra.
