Okay... now that I've got a chance to play with the new cards, I just wanted to discuss the yays and nays of the new frame. This is not meant to say these are bad or good for VS... just a sharing of opinions on what works and doesn't work in our opinions:
Cons:
1. Left/Right ATK/DEF:
It's okay. I mentioned before I didn't like it and it just seems more intuitive to make them stacked since you play your opponent in front of you, the top number (your "spear") is attack and the bottom number (your butt) is your defense. The left/right thing is kind of skewed because you need to compare crosswise.
2. Small Flight/Range symbols:
I liked them when they were bigger. This seems like the first time where I actually had to stare at the cards to make sure they had flight or range.
3. Harder to read card titles:
I prefer the dark text on light background. The light text on dark backgrounds seems to make the text smaller and harder to read.
4. Small affiliations text/symbols:
I don't mind going to symbols... but I think the should have made the text a bit bigger (or more legible) and at least the symbol larger or more pronounced.
Pros (because you should always end positive):
1. Larger art:
In the age of hi-def/1080p... widescreen is just where it's at. I know it makes some of the reprint cards look weird but I just like having the picture from edge to edge.
2. Cleaner design:
As much as I liked the old layout, the new one seems less cluttered to me.
3. Symbol usage:
Although I think they should be bigger when designating teams, the use of them makes it simpler to me.
4. Shinies!!!!
The foil versions are much better than the old ones. Less bendy and similar thickness to the non-foils. All the AOA Exclusives were hawt!
I like the frames... it gives VS an update and makes the reprints at least a bit different from the originals.
How did you guys feel about them now that you actually played with them?
I totally agree on the flight range symbols. I am notriously bad, especially when playing with new cards, with putting people without range in the back row. It is even more pronounced now because the symbols are smaller and more out of the way.
Another Con is not having team affiliation on the left side means it is a little more difficult to sort cards or remeber what teams you have in hand.
But personally I love the new style even if only for the new bigger art and the fact that it is new.
Just on a side note about foils some of them look really good, I got firewall and luke cage paid in full and they look great. But I also got the 198 which was very dark and difficult to recognize immediatley as a foil. It was also the first foil I pulled so I was put off at first but at this point I do like them better.
I like the new look of the foils but it's a hell of a lot harder to tell if the card is actually foil or not. I cracked a pack and didn't think anything of the cards until I went through them again and noticed that there was a small amount of shininess on Echo. It's kind of got a cool effect but I'm not sure which I like better as of right now. I'm still not a big fan of the new rarity for foils though.
I also don't like how the ATK/DEF values are slightly smaller as well as moved compared to the old cards. It makes it that much more difficult to make decisions while playing. The new spot for the affiliations isn't great either. I also liked it more when the affiliation text was bigger.
I asked a few non-card players and they thought the new look was more attractive.
I'm finding sorting Equipment and Concealed characters a little harder than usual.
Despite the talk of larger text I did find the things they shrunk to be a little harder.
As stated the team name, and flight and range symbols could all be larger, especially the team name, perhaps in future versions to make it easier on us you could use the team symbol in place of the circle that holds the cards cost, it would make quick team determination easier.
Other then issues with sleeves having the symbol on the right for some players blocking the def, I seriously don't remember one occasion where it occured to me I am playing with different cards. I don't remember ever missing F/R on a card nor do I remember being confused by the new cards format.
I would like the team name on the top, so when I'm sorting my cards for a draft deck I don't have to have the entire card in view to see the team name and the team symbols are way to small and easy to confuse, but I will probably get used to it, its not intuitive for most of them though. Other than that I didn't have any problems playing with them, and I like having more art.
I didnt like the seperate attack but when working with my 13 year old nephew the other day he said it made the cards way easier to figure out and he really liked them
I would think it would be a little easier now, since your ATK and opponent's DEF (and vice versa) actually line up if your cards are facing each other
I would like the team name on the top, so when I'm sorting my cards for a draft deck I don't have to have the entire card in view to see the team name...
I agree.
Ideally, the symbol should have been bigger and the left aligned so you can see the symbol when you have the cards fanned out much like you can see the cost and the ATK.
I like the look and feel of the new foils. There are complaints however, the of course boxes for flight range and attack and defense values. I imagine we'll adapt in time but even still, it's pretty spiffy.
The only thing that ticks me off is the size of the flight/range/ongoing symbols, and that the symbol is embossed in the backround of cards that do not have those attributes (if you dont have a ongoing PT to compare it to, a non-ongoing PT could look like it has ongoing).
The only thing I don't like is the team affiliation in the middle of the card. When I build my decks, I like to stack them in such a way that I can see all of the affiliations on the left side and all of the card name/versions on top (so each card goes on the pile down and the right a bit of the last).
Does anyone else like the idea of using the team symbol instead of the circle to back the card cost number in the upper left corner, I think (after we were familiar with the symbols) that it would make life easier.
Would it be too distracting to the number? Would the number make the symbol indecernable? Would there be additional templating costs that would make this unfeasable? If they did it would it actually make things easier?
