Is everyone else reading the press release the same way I am?
Upper Deck Entertainment (UDE) is currently working on the next Marvel Trading Card Game (TCG) Vs. System™ expansion set and would like the input of TCG players around the world. Releasing as a “players' choice” set, UDE's new Marvel Universe expansion will be created utilizing votes gathered from Vs. System fans who will have the opportunity to rally to have their favorite Vs. System components appear in the set. Players can begin casting their votes November 5 through December 31 on www.vssystem.com.
Sounds to me like this means that Civil War is off, and that the next Marvel set will be Marvel Universe. That would be consistent with what we were hearing a while back about artists being told they didn't need artwork for Civil War after all. It also sounds like there is going to be quite a lag between DC Legends and Marvel Universe, given that they are going to be soliciting input through the end of the year.
It could also mean that they have a Marvel [and DC] set in the planing stages and that the Marvel Universe/DC Universe sets would be in the same "timeslot" as the Marvel Legends and DC Legends sets are, but for next year. That would, hopefully, provide enough lead time to make it feasible.
So it would be:
December 2007: DC Legends
Feb/March 2008: Civil War
May/June 2008: Something DC related
August/September 2008: Marvel Universe
November/December 2008: DC Universe
Not sure about the normal lead time on a set, but I think that starting now would likely give them time to get the set ready for Gen Con 2008.
Now long between the collective card contest to make Nyssa and Legion coming out?
Ah, thanks for the clarification, Jeff. I was reading "Marvel Universe" as the name of the set.
Good to see you again. Don't be a stranger. :)
Edit: OK, I was starting to think I was a really dumb English major for completely misreading the press release, but in looking back at it, I think the problem is with the press release. Marvel Universe is capitalized and italicized the first time it appears in the text, then at the end it says "For more information on Marvel Universe and Vs. System organized play programs, please log onto www.vssystem.com." That sure makes it sound like Marvel Universe is the name of "the next Marvel Trading Card Game (TCG) Vs. System™ expansion set".
"Marvel Universe" just means it's a Marvel set, not a DC set...

Wait, so the Fan Set is after DC Legends?
That doesn't leave much time for development. Historically you guys have been way done with the next set. DCL is in the can, and now you're just starting the set to be released in March?
They probably have a bunch of generic cards with various desired functions/traits already. We're probably going to get vote for what type of character/story thing we want attached to it.

Bottom-up design I think it's called?
That's just going to end up with:

Let's see how many UDE personalities we can get posting on this subject. The TBS super-station may have already beat me to the punch with this info on another thread but on Monday there's going to be a full R/D article posted on vssystem that details more information about 08 Vs products, how the voting is going to work and the initial categories to vote on.
We tried to get that article posted today but there were some details that we were still working on and unfortunately we didn't manage to release the press release and the R/D article at the same time - which was our original goal.
So, ya - head over to Vssystem on Monday for full details about Marvel Universe AND check out that site on Monday for another article that has more information about 08 VS OP programs. To point back to the press release - specifics about the OP programs (like when/where the Mega weekends are being held) won't be ready until early December but we'll reveal more information about what's coming up in 08.
Also - check out the Galactus sneak preview on Vssystem that went live today if you haven't already.
