Well guys it is 12:02 pm my time & I can't sleep. I got all this new versus stuff buzzing in my head so I thought I would come online & share what I think about everything.
Wow! I was very happy that the announcement is done & over.
1) Concerning worlds:
I have been to 8 pro circuit tournaments. I never made day 2! THat means I scrubed every pro circuit tournament I attended! i say this to let you know that making money wasn't my purpose for going to these events. Vs has been good therapy for me & has given me allot of life lessons. I have also met allot of good people along the way. I had fun playing against players that will always be better then me.
The announcement of the no money world's tournament concerns me.
Versus isn't my first tcg. Star Wars wotc was my first tcg & I watched that game completely die after they took the money away from the tournaments. The last pro tournament that Star wars had was @ gen con indy 2005. This was the same time that David Leader won the Dr. Light modern PC. At that time the Star Wars world championship had only 20 people in attendance & they were even giving away decent Star Wars swag & computers n' such. I know this because 3 of my friends from Topeka were at worlds for SW WOTC! I remember my buddy Wade said to me that when they took away the $20,000 1st prize the people sucked out of Star Wars. It was sad but in the end my friends had to drive 10 hours to play with 20 people!
I have to wonder if we have a world championship without prize money could Vs share the same fate as Star Wars?
It would be nice if for @ least 1 super event a year like Worlds that money would be an option for prize support. I think it would put more spunk into vs then if they were to actually make a star wars versus expansion.
From now on I guess I plan on playing at the local hobby scene & wait for future announcements.
2) concerning less sets:
Tcg's in general are in a lull just because of the cost of playing them. At our local shop we are seeing allot more people playing video games, miniatures, board games & regular table top games just because they are not as expensive as tcgs.
I applaud Ude for makeing less sets for versus right now!
3) something to think about:
Most people who play versus are allot like those who buy comics. I won't buy back issues anymore if the comic is to far in its run. They cost too much & they can be hard to find at the right price. I love trade paper backs however. I even prefer them now & they usually have pretty good resale value. The same could be said of the versus singles market except their isn't any trades for versus.
Versus needs some kind of trade paper back. If i was getting into versus today I would feel a bit overwelmed just because of how many sets their have been. I have been telling newer players to start buying marvel legends & forgot about everything before. It would be nice if they would make some back issue stuff in essential collection form. This way newer players could get their hands on some of their favorite characters in a starter deck. It could also put a versus product on the market that would be cost effective for newer players to plug into.
4) We're making the set?
I am fine with this idea & I plan on participating weekly & am thankful to have the oppertunity to help.
1: If the mega weekend events have $ payout, then I'd be fine with no money at worlds. In fact, this might be the best way to go. Pros would still go, because of the ridiculously awesome prizes that we were promised will have great resell value*
* i hope =/
2: as far as sets go, well, I'm disappointed with the choice to print more cards per set. Then again, if there are fewer sets a year, it won't matter. Something I'll miss is the spectrum of flava`s cova`d. (ex, 4 sets a year saw x men crisis heralds and future teen heroes. thats a pretty varied cast of characters in the span of a year.) Are we going to something more focused now?
3: yeah, thats a good idea. except, they might not sell too well. If they reprinted stuff into 60 card starters with some new product, well, that's what I'd want. maybe 30 ... that way they could put decent reprints in without driving up the starter price. idk.
4: CI-VIL WAR! CI-VIL WAR!! CIVIL WAR!!! need I say more? =D
1. I just put a thread up about this very thing. I think Money at Mega Weekends and no money but amazing Prizes at Worlds is fine with me. I'll still make the trek.
2. I think this is a great Idea for my wallet :) LOL really tho it will give new players time to really get a taste for the game and give us time to really relax a bit and not have to rush around every time a new set comes out an try to break the set. I love it.
3. I've been saying from day one that wee need to put together 60 card decks with each of the teams and slap 2 rares in there to make it worth buying. I've had plenty of people say to me "" do they have starters "" to which I say ""Yea but there 2 30 card decks"" they say ""well thats stupid I'm all set"". ""I can build you a deck"" They say "" No I just wanted to get a deck and start playing"" I say "" I have pre made deck right here you can have one"" They say""How does it run""I say"" well it's common and uncommon so It's good "" they say ""no thank I'm cool"". If they had 60 card deck like Magic than people could pick up some random deck and play in a tourny and have some fun.
4. I love the Idea that UDE Trust us to make a set :) I can't wait till next week to see what we get to Vote on then:)
1) I'd travel for it if it was at its own event, but I fear they'll be placing it at Gencon, where it will be competing with tournies of WOW and Eye of Judgement, as well as the fun of simply wandering Gencon playing games. Being a gaming addict is tough :). As to which I'd play, eh, probably would be dependent on which game I had the most confidence in the deck I built.
2) Fewer sets is exactly against what I'm looking for. Sets get stale after drafting in about 2 months. When you have long spells, its often hard to get people back together (as was the case after MTU). Now with less people already, I fear that kinda pause would destroy the draft scene all-together.
3) Ehhh... much as it's a neat concept, the reality is that VS would make a terrible comic. Cast-of-thousands comic books always suck, and there are about 8 billion marketing moves that would be better for UDE (firing their current marketing team = good start).
I do prefer tradebacks though... I don't collect comics outside of trade format anymore, and threw away my old collection because it was taking too much space (I don't keep them in good enough condition to sell/e-bay).
4) Agreed, it's a neat concept and good idea. I just hope there are competitive people to play against by the time our set comes out :).
if their is one big event that I can qualify for i would be more likely to go at gen con then if it was some where else.
as for mega pcqs I probably won't go unless it is within reasonable driving distance. St. Louis, Dallas & possibly Chicago is more the lines of what I am thinking.
For prize support on these events what do you guys find acceptable?
