It was Locke (I am sure among others) who posted an idea of keeping base sets available for VS. Other games do this, and I think this game woudl be a great one to carry on that tradition.
What do i mean by base sets?
A set that contains maybe 350 cards or so for each side (Marvel and DC). At least a rough curve for each of the larger teams needs to be in there. Basic generic plot twists like Flying Kick and Burn Rubber. Also, you woudl want general but powerful cards to always be available in a set liek this... like Enemy or Beatdown or Mobilize... and some of the team specific rares that define a team, like Signal Flare or Fizzle.
A Marvel base set, and a DC base set... and ALWAYS keep them in print. If a player wants to jump into the game, they then have an option on where to start! And those cards coudl be the legal framework for future tournament builds and such.
What does everyone else think of something like this?
Something difficult about this is that there are so many different teams. I mean, the game I know with a Base Set is M:TG, with its 5-colors, so it is easy to have that. I mean, if I like Negative Zone (let's say), and wanted to build Negative Zone, then that should be in the Base Set, along with things like Kang, Avengers, Squadron, Morlocks, Crime Lords, X-Statix etc. I understand what you are saying, but I think that it won't work for this game the same way. I think MVL and DCL are as close as we will get to Base Sets.
i think instead of having team specific stuff constantly in print, some generic stuff. I would hesitate on keeping rares in print - but stuff like meltdown flying kick etc should be in constant circulation.
but at the same time, it gives you more to think about when cards you feel are key to your decks working, and can act as a challenge to keep it modern?
so my feelin on it would be if UDE did do it, i would think it more viable to have it a generic base with maybe one or 2 cards team.
I like it. Make it like Xmen, F4, Doom, Avengers, and Brotherhood for Marvel. Gotham, Superman, Arkham, Lanterns, and Squad for DC. Plus lots of generics.
I'd like to see some sort of base set type design element introduced in VS.
1 set for each company (DC and Marvel) that follows some specific rules and stays legal in all appropriate formats for a long time (DC sets wouldn't go into Marvel Modern, but having a Marvel and DC base set and two "expansions" each for a Silver Age would make sense).
Basics:
-3 sets of opposed teams in each set (FF v Doom, X-Men v Brotherhood, MK v Crimelord for a Marvel base set, for example)
-Certain commons stay in the base set. Flying Kick, Finishing Move, Burn Rubber, Jetpack, etc. Stuff that's ubiquitous enough that it could go with any team or combination of teams and that will always be useful.
-Large cardpools, partial reprints. Keeps things fresh for drafts and keeps established players from needing to constantly reinvest in the next base set while still allowing newer players to build up a card base that's comprable without a massive investment.
Over all, I think a Base set (or more likely 2) would be a great idea.
Will dual affiliations, we really can cover more fo the teams than we normally see.
How many Syndicate are also Crimelords? Avengers are also Defenders? X-Men are also Brotherhood or other teams? There is a ton of crossover.
Another option, which may or may not be accepted, is to streamline the teams. Print new affiliations that are like super grouping of previous cards. You coudl have the heroic mutant team... probably called Children of the Atom. The rules could state that all X-Men are part of this team by default, and they are all considered X-Men, so now you can use X-Men specific plots with them.
The Mutant Menace can be another, and contain Hellfire, Brotherhood and Morlocks.
Just an example of something that could be done. But in doing so, some of these teams woudl become VERY powerful, so the balance would have to be checked very carefully.
These super groupings could also be listed as another keyword or attribute. So while we might see Alpha Flight or X-Force printed, those cards woudl alos be stamped as Children of the Atom, and hence have a lot more card crossover and be usable in more builds.
Despite there being a lot of crossover, the next teams that will be made will still get screwed. Even if you are able to fit every single Marvel team into a single set (just going with Marvel for simplicity), that isn't going to be every single Marvel team ever, just every single Marvel team at this point.
I really don't think there should be something that auto teams-up certain teams. I mean, it just doesn't seem right. The X-Teams might work together on a regular basis, but teaming-up Brotherhood, Hellfire and Morlocks? Problems are that none of these teams get along with each other. Oh, sure you can crossover in your deck, but they won't just get along. The Brotherhood and the Hellfire Club are not part of "the same group" just because they are mutants that want to defeat the X-Men.
