I got started with Vs. back in the beginning when Marvel Origins 1st edition hit the street...those were the days. I can recall pulling the only beatdown I ever pulled from a pack that I bought at a gamestop in Woodland Hills :) Vs. replaced MTG as the kitchen table game of choice...
I ended up buying boxes of Web, DC and Man of Steel...with every box I bought, I was less happy with the game. Web had some nice legacy stuff but the DC set was so unbalanced and MoS just didn't work the way I hoped it would.
A combination of lack of theme interest in Marvel Knights and GLC and a shift in life (I got married the day I got my box of MoS) just caused me to lose interest in buying Vs. My group still played occasionally but interest waned as all we really played was Marvel with the occasional Titans deck.
I always kept track of the game but pretty much stayed out. Then I bought the Vs. PSP game.
It reminded me of what a great game this is...the mechanics and design of the game is truly brilliant. It rekindled my spark so I hit Ebay.and picked up boxes of JLA and Avengers...my table crew loved it!!! We built 40 card faction decks out of nothing but the boxes and what a blast!!!
Since then, I've gotten boxes of everything except MTU, X-Men, Legends and World's Finest. I plan on getting the Crisis box set and a box of MTU before Tgiving though...and I can't wait to get Galactus!!!
So, in a way, I've come full circle...last week, I bought two packs of Legends and I got my second Beatdown!!!
I am looking for a store in my area of OC that sells Vs. (Anaheim) but I am planning on jumping from the kitchen table to Edgeworld soon...
Cool. I am back also. I left for various reasons but what got me back in was the VS PSP/PC game. I downloaded it for PC and have been enjoying it. I think the biggest thing is I am a comic book fan first, and the game follows a story and brings thematic decks based on the situation. In the 'real game', especially when playing competitively (i.e. Pro Circuit) this pure thematic approach is not viable.
But when playing against the computer, I can pit my spider-friends / x-men team-up against his sinister syndicate build and have a blast!
I hope they release expansions and eventually factor in DC. :)
One question? Was it hard to learn the new abilities/keywords after being out for so long?
I've been an MTG player off and on since the beginning so adapting to new keywords is something you get used to...in this case, my players and I sat down with each set and played mini-faction decks. We would start within the set then do battles with other sets...this really helped me to adapt to new keywords. I recommend this to anyone as a way to learn a set.
Was the change in the look of the cards (MVL) jarring?
The new look I was pretty resistant against...I saw it as turning Vs. into "World of Vs.". It did initially keep me from wanting to get anything for the set...
After spending some time looking at the mechanics of the set and the idea/implementation of legends decks, I saw a nice elegance to the set. There was something there for old school players as well as bringing in a totally new way of building decks (well, not totally new if you've ever played Doom)...
I am not a fan of the look of the cards still but I can get with the set from a play and design standpoint.
Really, it's nothing more than a cosmetic change...granted, it's a change that makes the cards look exactly like a more percieved successful game. I think that's where the problem lies...Vs. loyalists see UDE as turning their game into the most popular vehicle they have...
The fact is, I can take the cards from MVL and play them in any deck just like any other card...my beatdown does the same job as my Origins one :)
